Chimps Trade Sex for Meat - April 9th 2009, 02:18 AM

Article

Quote:
(Newser) – Male chimps who get lucky hunting are a lot likelier to get lucky with female chimps if they share the spoils, a new study finds. Researchers tracked a band of chimps in the wild and found that while all were promiscuous, male hunters who shared meat—generally a rare treat for chimps—with females had twice as many partners, the Independent reports.
"Males who shared meat with females doubled their mating success," a researcher said, "whereas females, who had difficulty obtaining meat on their own, increased their calorific intake without the energetic costs and potential risk of injury related to hunting."
I find this a very interesting study. I guess this is like giving a rare gift to a woman and she gets excited. You are likely to get something out of it. It's funny how things work, animals are smarter than we think.

Wait... how do you know that this simply isn't due to sexual selection and the successful males have certain traits that the females like, and consequently can catch more food, mate more, etc...?

Not really that new. It makes sense that the male that provdes the most would mate the most.

And they say the way to a *man's* heart is through his stomach!
An interesting aside, I read a while ago about a similar study, in which chimps were given a kind of currency and trained to understand they could trade it for marshmallow fluff. Within a week of trying the fluff (as a reward for good behaviour), the scientists observed chimps trading sex for fluff. Two weeks after they understood what the currency was for, chimps were trading sex for it.
Prostitution--not a derived characteristic of humans alone! Proof we evolved from the monkey?

Not proof. We get blown around in the wind just like plants. Proof we evolved from plants? Having behavioral similarities (not saying plants have behavior), is not evidence for evolving from monkeys. If that were the case, then we could argue that we evolved from numerous other animals.

Because we are smarter, and we get mates for more complex reasons, etc.
