Thumbs up GirlGuiding UK Changes Promise - June 21st 2013, 04:40 PM

[Source: GirlGuiding UK]

I am personally really, really pleased to see this change that GGUK have made to ensure multiculturalism, and connect with an ever-more-secular society in the UK.

I don't know what others think - my sister is a Guide and (although she's agnostic theist) is less than impressed. I blame that on my mother, though, because she's Christian and my sister agrees with anything my mum says so long as it doesn't involve her doing something .

What does everyone else think? I'm glad - I think it's a really excellent, thoughtful change. Kudos to GirlGuiding from me.

I was a Guide for five years, and have been a Brownie leader for three. I think this is great! I always felt uncomfortable with "I promise to do my best to love my God.." Since it was like only girls with religious beliefs could join. Only thing needing changed now is about serving the queen. I'm no royalist.

Apparently the US. version is the same. How I was a girl Scout for 7 years and don't remember that I have NO idea. My mom was a leader too. Maybe we were too young for it to matter. I pretty much considered it like the Pledge of Allegiance, you say it because you're supposed to and don't pay much attention. The organization as a whole is kind of a mess now, but I think it's a good thing. Maybe we'll follow suit.

Give it 25 years and I'm almost certain it won't say "Queen".

(though quite likely "King," I'm afraid )

I'm definitely in favour of this. Fair play to them, organisations such as GirlGuiding should make an effort to include everyone, regardless of their religious beliefs.

Re: GirlGuiding UK Changes Promise - June 23rd 2013, 03:09 PM

Actually, one more thing needing changed, I'm not sure if this is the same in all troupes. But in mine we end like this:
*in a circle, head down, hands joined*
Leader: Now God hears me.
Girls: Now God hears me. [To the tune Big Ben makes when he chimes the hour]
Oh Lord our God, thy children call, grant us at peace, and bless us all. Goodnight!

I disagree with that as well. But ours is in a church hall so maybe it's part of the terms of us using it.

It's a step in the right direction, but yeah, I don't see why the Queen is mentioned at all.

She is their patron, and Head of State.

I think it is better but I am struggling to keep remembering to say the new lines. My guides (im a young leader) don't seem to notice the change for some reason

After we sing taps we end with two steps in one out salut. My old guides ended in a stamp so each differs. Both were in churches or church halls as well
