Teacher sends boy, 5, home with bag of poo . - April 23rd 2009, 05:35 AM

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/43405212.html
Quote:
A 5-year-old student at Apple Valley Elementary in Yakima headed home on the bus with more than books in his backpack. Inside was a smelly package his father never imagined he'd be toting around. "I'm still kind of in shock over this, because why would somebody do this? It's disgusting!" said the boy's father, who wished to be identified only as "Jason." Jason says his son's kindergarten teacher had bagged up a piece of human feces and stuck it in his son's backpack. His wife found the stinky mess. "She found a clear plastic bag with a piece of fecal matter wrapped up in a brown paper towel with the note on it," he said. The note read, "This little turd was on the floor in my room." Jason says his son's teacher, Mrs. Graham, called last Friday and said her classroom was "stinky." She asked if the boy could have had an accident. Jason acknowledged the possibility, as his son had had a couple of accidents in the classroom in the past. He told Mrs. Graham there were extra clothes in his backpack. Jason never imagined the teacher would send his son home with evidence of his accident. After his wife found the bagged mess, Jason e-mailed school officials. Days later, he received a response apologizing for the delay in dealing with the issue. On Tuesday, he was still waiting for a chance to speak to school officials about the incident. "What would have happened if it had stayed in there and she hadn't checked the bag? And other kids were playing on the bus and it got out? And it's a very hazardous thing. It's disgusting!" The school's superintendent said the boy's teacher and the school principal are being questioned. School officials said they'll meet with Jason and his wife next week. In the meantime, Jason wants his son placed in a different teacher's classroom for the remainder of the school year.
Fire the teacher!

LOL, I found this quite hilarious. Naturally, a 5-year old would have some accidents. However, I have to admit, I do like her style of showing evidence for it. TBH, I'd be pretty pissed if I came in and saw a pile of crap on the floor but then again, I wouldn't teach kids that young anyways.

I actually wonder if there's a rule or policy against this, as I know the teacher cannot harm the student (she didn't), cant threaten (she didn't), however, the issue of putting the child and other children in danger may be debatable for this.

She deserves to lose her job by all accounts; there's no way this could have been appropriate. But honestly, especially because the delay in the school's response, I think the teacher's going to end up being let off the hook. They'll end up covering it up somehow. It's all politics in school systems anyway, nowadays. They'll do whatever to save their skins and make the district look better.

I really hope she's not fired. She's had to work hard to get where she is and by firing her you basically de-rail her entire life as she would never get another teaching post at a half decent school, or very possibly at any school. I don't see why somebody's life should be effectively ruined for one silly mistake. A suspension without pay maybe, but not firing.

I can also see why she was so angry as to make such a stupid decision. There is a difference between "having an accident" in your pants and trousers and going to the toilet on the classroom floor. I imagine the idea was to embarrass the kid into never doing it again.

thats awful!! he's 5! accidents happen! not only is it humiliating for him, its unsanitary for the boy, his classmates and yes the teacher, too. if she reacts this way to something so simple, she should NOT be teaching!

I agree with Jack on this one. She shouldn't lose her job over this, that would ruin her life. She made a mistake, so what? Everyone does it, its just that these day's its all about 'the little children' and not hurting their delicate feelings.

I mean, I can see peeing in your pants. I know I did it when I was 6. Maybe even going #2... But dropping a deuce on the classroom floor? That's a little far fetched to me. I don't care if he's five, THAT is the gross part. Yes, the teacher took the wrong course of action, but can you imagine seeing a turd in the middle of your classroom floor? I don't know about you, but I'd be pretty dang mad.

I think the parnets should have been called when he had an accident and been forced to clean up their son's mess. It is degrading to a teacher who has been to college to pick up poop.

The teacher acted immaturely and should be punished, but I don't know if firing her is the best idea. She didn't handle the situation properly, granted. But you'd be upset too if there was a little piece of crap on the floor of your classroom and you had to pick it up. The parents and the principal should have been contacted so the real problem could be taken care of: Why is there a five-year-old crapping on a classroom floor??

For Christ's sake, the little boy was 5! I used to have a lot of accidents at that age, but thats no reason to put his feces in his backpack! That was very, VERY rotten of the teacher to do, and I hope karma comes her way.

I'd be annoyed if I was a teacher and when I went into my classroom that was on the floor but you'd just talk to the kid and his parents about it to make sure it didn't happen again, you wouldn't scoop it up and put it in the kids bag because it's just too far as well as immature. You'd expect that from the children she's teaching, not her.

I could see myself doing this when in certain moods... but I definitely would have just quit and extremely apologized to the parents. And the district, administration and so forth. Hopefully I'll grow out of my immature anger before I get a job.

Leaving a bag of crap in a five year old's bag is gross and sick as well as dangerous...but as much as I'd rather not think of the subject, how did the crap end up on the floor in the first place? I'm suspicious of both the teacher and the little boy. yuck yuck.

Can someone please explain to me how its *dangerous*. I mean, ok, if the kid ate it, it might be bad or make him ill, but if they kid knows its poo, I highly doubt he is going to be eating it.

The teacher should get told off, and warned to not do it in future, but not fired. Teachers are human... if a 5 year old consistantly crapped on my floor, I would not be impressed. So it isnt particularly hard to imagine that someone would be pushed to doing this. 5 year olds can use a toilet, its not like pooing in the classroom is something most 5 year olds do.

But most places do need teachers, so whats the use of firing an experience teacher, particularly if she doesnt have a bad history.

Re: Teacher sends boy, 5, home with bag of poo . - May 1st 2009, 06:12 PM

Putting faeces in another persons bag is not humane and humans make mistakes but that was just cruel and disgusting. If that mode of thinking was carried across every single bad thing that happened in the world then there wouldn't be the need for rules and regulations and we would be in a mess.

True the child going to the toilet on the floor is not nice but putting it in his bag is not going to solve the issue. The teacher should have called the parents in and explained the problem and had a calm talk with the child, like any sensible and good teacher would have done. To think people like that are in charge of when could potentially be your child in the future sickens me. You can train another person to be a teacher, a sensible, mature and responsible person who treats people with respect and care.

Yes, okay the child was 5 years old and wayyyy beyond diaper stage.
So him crapping on the floor is slightly immature. But hey, he's 5 and it was an accident and little kids are allowed to be immature.
But a full grown ( and I use the term full grown because I clearly can't use the term mature) should know better than to act like that. There were a hundred better things she could have done rather than putting it in his bag!
For starters she could have been a responsible adult with a duty of care for the children in her classroom and just cleaned it up quickly and got on with things and had a quiet word with the boy and his parents later. I mean, she obviously cleaned it up but why'd she have to put it in his bag??

The teacher should get told off, and warned to not do it in future, but not fired. Teachers are human... if a 5 year old consistantly crapped on my floor, I would not be impressed. So it isnt particularly hard to imagine that someone would be pushed to doing this. 5 year olds can use a toilet, its not like pooing in the classroom is something most 5 year olds do.

But most places do need teachers, so whats the use of firing an experience teacher, particularly if she doesnt have a bad history.
I agree.
