Gay Marriage Now Legal Nationwide! - June 27th 2015, 10:53 PM

Since no one has made this thread yet, I'll go ahead and announce that as of yesterday (6/26) the U.S. Supreme Court declared that gay marriage is legal in all 50 states. This means that the 19 states that did not recognize unions of same-sex couples legally married elsewhere are now required by law to grant them the same rights as opposite-sex married couples. Same-sex couples can also be legally married in any state they choose.

Of course there are debates everywhere, but my opinion is this: denying someone rights based on who they are never made sense to me and you have a right to your own opinion, but disagreeing, preaching, or condemning someone because of the way they were born isn't going to change who they are.

I think this ruling is brilliant. My only issue with it is I've seen a lot of people saying things like 'the fight is over', and really the fight is far from over for the LGBTQ+ community. People are still dying, and we need to keep fighting.

yeah I'm really happy about this. But gosh it was about time! They've finally came around, so that's good. This should have happened years ago but, at least it's one step forward.

It's about time the United States made it legal, I didn't think they would make it legal until decades later lol.

But congratulations and well down America!

Agreed. This bothered me when we voted for marriage equality in Ireland, with people saying stuff like "we're finally an equal country" and "queer people have full equality now". I mean, that isn't even remotely true. Queer people do not yet enjoy legal equality here, let alone social equality.

That being said, it's still a fantastic moment. Look at how rapidly attitudes towards the queer community have changed in America. I believe homosexual activity was only decriminalised twelve years ago, now there's marriage equality nationwide.

Actually I think the fight is just starting. Its a good step, but really its just the beginning.

This is really nice to hear, it's good to see something positive happening in the LGBTQ+ community, especially after all the negative things that the media says nowadays. Big steps.

There are no words for how happy this ruling made me! It's incredible to finally have the right to marry anywhere within my country. As Harri said, the fight is far from over. This is a beautiful, incredible leap forward, though.

Re: Gay Marriage Now Legal Nationwide! - June 30th 2015, 07:56 AM

The main reason I opposed this ruling from a legal standpoint, is because of the importance of specificity in legal definitions, and in this case, the definition of marriage. The plan for Australia is to change the definition of Marriage in the Marriage Act, from "between one man and one woman" to "between two people". I am not American, so I don't know the legal definition of marriage in America, so I will make the same assumption.

That considered, what safeguards are there for the matrimony of romantic couples that society generally objects, such as between first and second cousins? Are there exemptions in the Constitution, or is that definition all there is? My basic question:

If "love is love", where do you draw the line?

I have my lovely Guardian push notifications and I was very happy when I saw this and immediately put it in a group chat with my friends - their responses interested me, and it was more geared towards "that took them a while" than "yaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!" (the latter being my initial response).

Still...yaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!

How does a simple change from one man and one woman to between two people change anything to do with familial relations? One man and one woman could be cousins.

I was pretty happy about this ruling but I do get a bit frustrated when people make comments about the fight being over. I think this was a great step to have been taken but I think that the world has a long ways before the fight is over. LGBTQ still face discrimination in a lot of countries and they are still going to face discrimination in the US. There are still things that need to be overcome before the fight is truly over. But, with that being said, I am happy with this ruling and am so happy that my friends marriages (if they choose to marry) will be recognized in all 50 states. It's a big step.

I'm glad my marriage will be recognized everywhere, but as stated, the fight is far from over.
