"Montauk Monster." - May 15th 2009, 04:00 AM

Quote:
An odd creature has apparently washed up on New York's coast, sparking claims that it may be another so-called "Montauk Monster."
A similar carcass sparked an online and media frenzy last July after appearing at a popular surfing spot near Montauk, N.Y.
Nicky Papers, who runs a Web site dedicated to the mystery, says he was contacted by a couple on May 5 who "think they’ve found what appears to be the Montauk Monster" on the North Fork of Long Island. Papers wrote that he traveled to Southold, N.Y., to view the remains.
"The beast smelled like a mix of low-tide and rotten garbage," Papers wrote. "It really smelled horrific. I couldn’t help but take numerous pictures of it and video clips."
He said the carcass was being kept in a "cooler full of ice."
'Race against the clock'
Papers suggested there might be a link between the creature and the nearby Plum Island Animal Disease Center.

"If this is a genetic mishap from Plum Island, we’d like to sell the remains to an independent lab for study," he wrote on www.montauk-monster.com. "It has become a race against the clock as the couple who originally found 'Beastie' are diligently putting more ice into the cooler to keep the carcass fresh."
Papers says he's "dedicated quite a bit of time to debunking all theories presented regarding the Montauk Monster" since establishing his Web site last summer.
"I haven't ruled out biological warfare on this yet," Papers added. "A diseased carcass floating in waterways around Long Island could be infecting the water."
Some bloggers speculated that the original "Montauk Monster" may have been a viral marketing ploy for an indie movie while others suggested it may actually be a decomposing dog, pig or raccoon.

I think this is disgusting. How would something like that end up in the water? On the other hand, it's kind of hilarious. A random carcass washing up on the shore? It sounds like some kind of cheesy horror movie.

Ew, its all bloated and gross
The pictures from the carcass found before looked kinda fake to me. I'm curious as to what this could be though..

That thing is repulsive looking... wouldn't it be scary to see one running around alive, though?

LOL, +10 internetz.

To me, the picture looks like a rather brutalized animal, along the lines of a dog. Oddly enough, the last "monster" thing also looked much like a brutalized dog. Whether or not this dog was abused or simply decomposing I'm not entirely sure on.

The idea of "biological warfare" seems a nice catchy idea to get popularity and perhaps even go alongside the ever-so popular Swine Flu outbreak. After all, "Swine Flu plus other outbreak disease" would make magnificent headlines.

God thats disgusting.
To me it kinda looks like a really mangled bear, or a bloated dog, or some kind of racoon. It looks like its been dead for ages.
It'll be exciting if it's a new species/mutation though.

It looks like a bloated Grey Hound or Great Dane. And if it's true that these carcasses are coming from an animal disease and research center, I would think that a full investigation would be announced, since you probably can't just dump that into the ocean.

Nobody has done a good job with these stories. Sinse the 1967 bigfoot footage of a man/woman in a monkey suit. Who scientist today, still can't decide whether its fake or real. Even when the family has come out to media sources and said it was a hoax.

I think it's funny that the guy admits to "being surprised that it smelled so bad."
Duh? It's dead? Not quite something you'd want to use for an air freshener.
The gross thing is that people could have and probably swam in that water, with that thing...

It's a prelude to Cloverfield 2.

I decided to read up about this. It sounds fascinating. I'd love to know where 'it' came from. (if not Plum Island)

The other one looked scarier. If someone is making these, they are starting to get lazy about it. : p
