Tattoos? - December 18th 2016, 02:52 AM

For this post, pretend that you have a daughter or a son. At what age would you give them consent to get a tattoo? Pretend they are underage and you need to sign the consent for them to get it. Also, why'd you pick that age?

The law is you have to be 18 or older to get a tattoo you can't get it before even with consent at least I know it's like that in most states.
I'll let them get them on there 18th birthday I'll even buy the first one.

Very frankly, i wouldn't allow it underage, unless something significant happens (eg: Loss of a close friend or family member) and they want to commemorate that. In that case, if the law permits it (some states in the US allow it with parental consent), I'd say 17 is the age.
Otherwise, I'd say wait till you're 18 at least. Then I'll even buy it for them

They'd have to be 18. I got a tattoo just before I turned 16 and while I don't regret it, I was definitely too young. There were tattoos I had planned when I was younger that I no longer want or plan on getting.

They can get a tattoo when they're a legal adult. Everyone I know who got a tattoo before they were 18 regrets it now. Really, for anyone I also suggest printing the design and putting it somewhere you will see it every day, like the bathroom mirror, for at least a year.

I say 18, and I'd suggest that it be a size, and in a place that can easily be covered for future jobs and such.

Eighteen, and they can pay for it themselves. I like tattoos but that's not my job as a parent.

This is how I feel. Personally, I am not a huge fan of tattoos and won't pay for my child to get one. If they want it they can save for it. They'd also have to be 18. I will not give consent for them to have one so they can wait until they are old enough.

18, and I won't pay for it unless it's a Block M. They might want it before then, but too bad, I'm stubborn.

The legal age is 18 but u can have it at 16 with the parent consent. I wont let my kids have their's till they are t least 17. But Im being hypocritical. Cause I have one at 13. So I say round 16+.

But in your situation you can't sign as a parent, you aren't a legal guardian. So while you may urge them to wait until 17, their legal parent could still sign off at 16.

I got my first tattoo at 22. My kids can wait until they are 18 and pay for it themselves.

The reason I have brought this up is within the past couple months I have two friends who signed consent for their children to get tattoos. One is 15 and the other is 16

Re: Tattoos? - December 19th 2016, 04:04 AM

I would only allow them to get a tattoo when they become of legal age.

I myself don't have any and wanted to when I was younger but I kept changing the design I wished to get so I'm glad I didn't go through with getting the tattoo I wanted at the time.

I don't think I'll get a tattoo not because I hate them (because I don't! I think some of them are quite pretty ) but it's not something I'd go and get done. However, if my son or daughter were to get one, I'd make sure they were serious about the design they want.

Well, the thing is, its probably better to talk to your kids, and get the idea etc. So if its really important they can get it, and since you're the parent you can at least make sure that your child is heading to a good place. Like, my mum is against and when i get my tats, I am headed to this parlor that is very well reputed (Google + friends reviews + contacting other people who reviewed + visiting it personally), but loads of kids get it done at shady places.
Point is (sorry I ramble), its probably better to talk to your child and if they are completely insistent, maybe not pay for it, but at least go with them so they go to a decent joint

Re: Tattoos? - December 19th 2016, 06:43 PM

It'd depend on what kind of person they are. Most likely, I'd rather wait until the legal minimum age of 18.

But if that means that they'd go and do it anyway in hiding, in some shit dirty place, where there is a high risk of getting infected with something like hepatitis, then I'd take a more relaxed approach (at my own expense if I were to be held accountable by authorities).

I'd rather relax my own controls and standards, than end up with an entirely out-of-control situation (which is what my parents experienced multiple times with myself).

Ideally, I'd rather avoid any of that. But some kids are naturally rebellious for really irrational reasons sometimes. Hereditary factors play into it, and I have some of them in myself. If I set my mind on something, there ain't nobody telling me I "can't do it", even today. Or at least not without a good explanation of "why not". The "I'm big you're small / I'm right you're wrong" attitude doesn't fly with me, and never did. It'd just piss me off (and still does when I cross it). I wouldn't be surprised if any kids I have in the future show similar traits... and I'd make a big mistake ignoring that or failing to accommodate it. It's the same mistake my parents made multiple times.

.

"I don't care about politics"
Then politics doesn't care about you either. Truth. You've got to make your voice heard, if you want to be listened to. But that's too logical for some people, so let me go a step further. Not making your voice heard, leaves other people free to hijack it by speaking on your behalf, even if they don't actually give a shit about you. That's politics. So, make your voice heard. That's not a quote from anywhere. That's just me.

Re: Tattoos? - December 20th 2016, 01:20 AM

If I had a kid, I wouldn't let them get a tattoo too young. Like I'd make them wait to be 18+ because I know how quickly I and most other teenagers I know would rush to make decisions instead of taking the time to carefully choose out something meaningful and saving up for it and making sure it's a long term choice. I know too many people with really ugly/trashy tattoos to want to let my kid rush into something. If they wanted a tattoo (e.g. at 16), the world isn't going to end by insisting they wait to be 18 - if they still want the tattoo after 2 years, I know they really want it.

Not really sure, but 18 for sure. I got a tattoo when I was 18. I don't like it anymore, but I won't cover it up. It's part of who I was. Later I got a tattoo at 21. Aesthetically I love it, but the reason I got it (I was religious at the time and I am not anymore) I no longer agree with. But I still like the way it looks. I think really the whole regretting your tattoo is just a matter of perspective.

I would make them wait until they're eighteen. One's taste changes a lot over the teenage years and something they want when they're younger may not be something they like as much when they're an adult. Plus, if you wait until you're older, you have more time to plan it out, how you might want it to mesh with future tattoos, etc.

Depends. I'd make them explain the design to me like what it means and why they want it. If I agree with it (so if it's not something silly or inappropiate and they actually have a reason for it other than it's cool) and the place they want it at I'd choose the parlor and go with them to make sure everythings done right and they don't go back on me and change the design.
Under these conditions I'd allow it 15+.

Eighteen, just like my mom made me wait. Plus the place I go to will NOT tattoo anyone under eighteen, with or without parental consent.

I would only pay for my future children's tattoos if it's a Block O.

(sorry, the opportunity was too perfect to pass up)

But in all seriousness, my future children will only be getting tattoos once they can sign off and pay for it. The only (real) exception is a commemorating tattoo for a loved one who has passed away. That I would pay for and sign off on before 18.

i think the age limit is there for a reason tbh, even adults screw up and get tattoos they regret.
if i had gotten every tattoo i wanted throughout growing up, i would have a symbol of a religion i no longer belong to and almost no bare skin left on my hands lol.

however, i wouldn't discourage them from getting them, when they turn 18. hell, i might even go get one with them, if they're not going with friends or anything.

i would definitely tell them to draw or print out the tattoo and hang it on their wall. then in a year, 3 years, etc. see if they still want it.

My mother hates tattoos so if left to her she won't let me get one even now. Good for her, I am too chicken to actually get one. My kids can get their tattoos after they are 18 and they are going to have to pay for it themselves.
