I'd have to see statistical proof as to whether men find the female chest more, less, or just as sexually provocative as women find the male chest to be.

I'm not sure what i think..
I mean, society tells us what is valguer and what isn't,
at one point in history it was inproper to say 'leg' in mixed company.
I think maybe it isn't sexist as much as it's just societys current law.
If that makes any sense.

I can honestly say I've never thought about this before, and I'm not sure what I think of the matter. Maybe it's more a matter of decency - men aren't allowed to walk around with their penises showing, and women aren't allowed to walk around with their breasts bare. Seems pretty fair to me.

Absolutely!

I don't think I'd have the guts to go topless myself, but I sure do believe I deserve the right to. Either that or strip men's right to go topless. This is something I've always thought was unfair.

But women can't show their vaginas, and some men have boobies too, but they are still allowed to go topless.

Uh...is this poll some kind of a joke? No offense if it's not...I understand your viewpoint, but it's sexist for a reason. If you walk around public places topless, you're putting yourself at risk. You get a lot of the wrong kind of attention. If men and women sexually molest/rape people who are fully clothed, just think of what would happen if a woman is walking down the street topless.

It's sexist, but it's to keep women safe.

If bad things didn't exist in the world, I probably still wouldn't want women to run around topless. Too much of a distraction. The world just wouldn't work out very well.

It's okay for men to walk around topless because women/men don't really dream about a guy with man boobs. It's not a common fantasy to see topless guys with man boobs, therefore being a guy without a shirt on is perfectly acceptable. Since women actually have the REAL boobs, and people ACTUALLY fantasize about seeing women topless, it's not acceptable because it gives you the wrong kind of attention...and lots of the wrong kind of attention.

Well, I've never actually thought about this before. But well, aren't breasts technically sexual organs of some kind? (Lack of a better way to describe them, but you get what i mean. They wouldn't exactly be grouped together with your limbs.)

Either way, feel free to fight the cause; ladies. One chest at a time, haha.

That doesn't keep women safe, it oppresses them. The way to keep women safe is to give us pepper spray and teach us self defense techniques.

Why should that determine the law? It's legal for women to wear tight clothes and very revealing clothes, which is, without a doubt, provocative too.

Boobs are such a sexually portrayed body part in today's society.

In most places, men have to have a shirt on to go into a store or a place like that.

But I don't really have an issue that it's more acceptable for a guy to go without a shirt. Boobs tend to attract more attention than little man nipples, I think.

The thing is that you can already buy pepper-spray and you can have someone teach you self-defense. Are you saying that the government would supply you with free pepper-spray and make self-defense lessons free and mandatory just because you want to go topless?

It's not sexist. A woman walking around topless would be like a man walking around with nothing on from the waist down. It's just the way human nature and the body is, you don't get to parade around half naked showing your 'girly parts' and neither do guys.

There's nothing controversial about seeing a dudes chest, but if it were another part of him that was not clothed, it would be controversial

To be honest, I don't feel opressed because I'm not allowed to show my bare nipples in public. Seriously, you can walk around (or work in the yard or be at the beach) with big band-aids over your nipples, as a female, and you're still within the legal confines of "decency" in most North American jurisdictions. And you're allowed to be topless on your own property, male or female, as long as you're not standing on the edge of your property and flashing passersby. Also, men's "breasts" such as they have, are not secondary sex characteristics. They are biologically different from female breasts, which develop and change differently when a girl hits puberty. To compare a man's nipples and pecs with a woman's breasts is a false comparison.

I don't understand why people, but seemingly women in particular, have this idea that to be liberated, we have to be naked. To be honest, I feel more oppressed as a scantily-clad sex object than a modestly dressed young woman. I've tried both styles on, and I can tell you, sex object isn't really my style. I don't see how it can be liberating for anyone. Don't we all desire something more than cheap sex appeal all the time?

There are easier (and more sun-safe! ) ways to stay cool in the summer and more modest ways of being pretty. Leave something to the imagination, eh?
[/modesty rant]

Feminism, what??????? Tits are sexual, that's the end of it. Unless one day we all become heterosexual females with babies, the only time when breasts AREN'T sexualised, boobs will forever be boobs.

I think men shouldn't be allowed to bare themselves in public. No one should be able to. It's immodest. Our society has a huge problem with immodesty....and we wonder why there are so many sexually active kids.

I swear never to be silent whenever wherever human beings are enduring suffering and humiliation. We must take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented. Sometimes we must interfere. When human lives are endangered, when human dignity is in jeopardy, national borders and sensitivities become irrelevant. Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must — at that moment — become the center of the universe.

I'm just saying that, in my opinion, it's more safer to have them covered up than it is to expose them to the public.

As far as feminism goes, I think we have to pick and choose our battles. This is making mountains out of mole hills. There are many bigger issues in female equality than whether or not we can go topless, and I think it's more important to address those.

Re: think it's sexist? - May 26th 2009, 11:06 AM

There is a difference between being allowed to go topless, period, and being allowed to go topless in designated areas. Many restaurants, shops, and public buildings require men to wear shirts, as they require women to wear shirts.

A man may walk down a street with no shirt, however, and of course would go topless in swimming areas. Women may not, for the most part, except in areas with regulations specifically allowing that. I honestly believe that is because women's bodies are so overly sexualized by the media while men's are not, but at the same time women are expected to maintain some form of modesty. "Be sexy, but not a slut. This is what sexy is. Overt sexuality may be deemed slutty." You get the picture.

Now, bodies are sexual things, during sex and intimate situations. A bare breast, however, be it male or female, is simply a bare breast. Everyone has similar anatomy. Society dictates decency, however, and society says topless women (in most situations) are indecent.

Fair? Who knows. I don't personally intend to walk around topless. I wouldn't like for my girlfriend to, although that's her choice in the end. And I'd certainly not let my underage child do anything of the sort, even if she were 17 years and 360 days old. This is coming from someone who was raised in a very sex- and body-positive home. If someone else wants to, good for her. If she will be comfortable with people staring (notice I did not say men, as many women and children would stare, too) at her naked chest that's all good and well. I look forward to the day when seeing a breast isn't so shocking that people would stare more than I do the day women are "allowed" to go topless.

Do girls actually want to? The twins need support!
Yes, it's a double standard, but frankly, I don't need to see any topless people. Sure down the beach, or on the street on a hot day [rare in Scotland ].
Interesting fact, in Malta, no one is allowed to be topless walking down the streets. My friend's mother told him off cause he could have been picked up by the police. But this is purely because it's a very religious country.

There isn't a great need for anyone to be topless anyways, so who cares that much?

I don't get it I mean where do you see guys topless except the beach and while jogging or working out. For the latter two I HIGHLY doubt any of us girls would want to be topless. And other people have already said why the first would be bad. I mean boobs=sexual I think that's fine, we get less sunburned than guys.

Well apparently you can be naked in public as long as you're not doing it in a sexual manner.

So I don't know why women don't go topless, maybe it's because as someone said before they'd get a lot of the wrong attention and it could give out the wrong impression. Or maybe a lot of women just don't feel comfortable in going round topless. Anyway I think that if a woman wants to then she should just be allowed.

I don't think it's sexist ... don't know why, I just don't.
And I prefer to be topless too, but I still don't mind that it's illegal.

I don't think it's sexist. I don't think guys should go around topless either. The only time I see fit to now wear a shirt is at the pool. And maybe if you are doing physical labour outside.
I live in the south, and it gets very hot in the summer. I never see guys walking around shirtless unless they are jogging. It's smarter to wear a shirt. Hello? Sunburn. That hurts. Do girls really want it all over their chest?

Actually, a lot of places you can walk around topless. Just businesses have the right to refuse you.If you are being vulgar, then yeah you can get in trouble.

Breasts are sexual. They're an intimate thing so to speak. It's just like no one can go around with their pants off. Women have the joy of having some stuff above and below the waist.

Plus, I don't even want to think about how much more sexual harassment and so forth would go on. It's almost a safety thing for women too.

Breasts aren't technically involved in sex. their purpose is to feed babies, that doesn't seem like a sex organ to me...
