What would you like to see change in society? - August 10th 2009, 07:31 AM

Name as few or as many things as you like!

I personally would like to see people starting caring more about things. Apathy is one of the most annoying and frustrating things in the world to me. That might be one of the hardest things to change though!

I would like to see less judgment in the world. I may not agree with all the choices people make, but I don't judge the people who make them. At least, I try not to.

I am including a quote my mother shared with me.
"Promise yourself to give so much time improving yourself that you have no time to criticize others." Christian D. Larson

We really need to change the Education system.

Ignorance is also holding us back.

1) We need people to be able to take things less personally so they can look at certain things more objectively and impersonally when they need to.
2) We need people to have less narrow-minded views.
3) We need people to have more common sense and think more logically.
4) We need a greater education system. When we make it more lax then not only does the generation that's in the education system suffer, but also when they go into the workforce.
5) We need to not let petty relationships interfere with our lives. There's nothing wrong with having relationships of any kind, however, when we devote excessive amount of time especially to the minor relationships, then we begin to suffer. In other words, we need to attempt to help but we need to understand that there's a cut-off point for the day or week.

You do realize that even in the Medieval times, if someone find a pile of coinage out in the road then they'd go for it?

Now to be contraversial:

-Less religion.
-A completely secular state.

On a slightly less contraversial note:

-Better education, especially sex education.
-More political honesty from those in power.
-A different voting system, preferably the two-round system.
-More of a desire for knowledge.

The school system takes away our desire for knowledge as soon as we get into school.
And, I must disagree about less religion. People need faith, hope. Or the world would just crumple. (just my opinion, though =)

Yup, education destroys intrinsic motivation while placing the emphasis on extrinsic motivation which doesn't really work past working for exams. Hence why I wanted a better educational system.

Hope and faith can be found without religion. My life is filled with far more hope without religion and I think hope is better placed on something solid and concrete rather than a (in my opinion) fictional entity. I've seen far too many people lose faith and come crashing down, often pretty badly. Plus, personally I think mostly all religion does is bolster stupidity and intollerance and generally stands in the way of progress. Maybe there are some good things but nothing which could not be achieved without religion. But hey, this thread is all about what each person would like to see and that's just my opinion: Your opinion differs and I respect that.

I'd like to see more general acceptance, we don't all have to agree, but we need to at least learn to agree to disagree and stop discrimination. We also need less stigmatization of mental illness and suicide and to fix both the adult and juvenille legal systems, they are a mess!

I'd like to see less suffering, of all kinds. In my ideal world, people would respect animals, not abuse them to fulfill their every whim.

Also a secular state would be be preferable (to me). It is absolutely fine for people to be religious, there is nothing at all wrong with that, it is when the religious customs are forced upon the people who choose not to be religious that things go awry. This is only my opinion though.

An education system that is improved, means something, and educates people to their desired level of education.

More open-mindedness and acceptance (basically everything Katie said), better invidivual judgement. I guess more of a 'live and let live' lifestyle in general.

Agree with both of these. But, religion can be useful to some people providing they don't become extremists. I wouldn't consider religion by any means to be necessary though. So I agree with the idea of less religion but I'm unsure on the idea of no religion.

I think that even if sex education is better, then there still is an issue with influence from the media and others. But I do still agree for better education.

I'm curious on this one. Is there not enough desire for knowledge? The problem is at least in the real world, there are numerous restrictions on how some of the knowledge can be attained. So an increased desire would be good but if the restrictions are still there, then we're almost back to where we started.

I think he's referring more to those who have access to knowledge but decide that obtaining it is too much of an inconvenience to pursue.

Less ignorance and more understanding. If people could understand where everyone else was coming from, it'd save a lot of strife. I for one, despite being an Atheist, am sick of atheists running around at every religious person they can find telling them that they're an idiot and insulting their beliefs. Same for anything really...it seems these days if people disagree on something, it has to be taken to extremes and taken down to an insulting level, rather than sensible debate or even just "Okay, that's your opinion, I have mine- simple as." rather than people just going all-out at each other over trivial matters.

The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways; the point is to change it.

I'd like to see-
-No more judgement(no more racism, sexism, ect.)
-I'd like to see $$ being spread out more evenly, people with billions and billions of dollars should be SPREADING that money to people who need it. and I don't mean like $100 to charity every now and then!
-People understanding other people, or at least giving them a chance.
-Better education for those who can use it, or at least will try.
-Better law enforcement(atleast near where I live, our cops are TERRIBLE!)
-More people listening to people who voice their opinons(You'd be suprised with who has the right ideas on how to fix this world, if you'd just listen!)
-And lastly, for more people to have faith or hope in SOMETHING, not even just religion, just some glimmer of hope, I think without hope, the world would be worse then it is now!

I agree with pretty much what everyone else has said. Also, I'd definitely like to to see incredibly rich people giving most of their money to charity instead of spending it on material possessions.

Less discrimination.
TBH I'd love a world without money. I don't agree with it, although I accept i "need" it to live (ie to get food/shelter etc).

I also wish people would't screw the dole. Faking illness for money is sick and is depriving those in actual need of it.

You've not noticed how ignorant most people are? This in general stems from a lack of desire to learn and gain knowledge for its own sake. Our educational system places emphesis on passing exams so people only strive to attain knowledge which will directly allow them to pass those exams but no further. Much of the issues we have to today like political apathy, intollerance etc stem from a lack of knowledge and understanding which could so easily be gained with a desire to learn.

I'd love to see less discrimination, more openness, understanding, and kindness. Less hatred and anger.
