Announcement for Child Custody - September 22nd 2009, 11:04 PM

I don't want to give a link to the announcement as that would be putting exactly where I live and.. it's a small town

I was looking through the paper today in the classfieds (looking for work) and I came across this legal announcement from child welfare services (or whatever it's called) telling the parents (and the entire area in the process) when the court date was and where etc and telling them they had to be there, and giving the child's full name.

Just wondering..

Do you think this is right/fair for child welfare to do?

Sure, obviously there is a reason that the child is being (potentially) taken away. But.. do they really have to announce to four towns that these people are bad parents?

Depends on what the parents did.

In the UK, putting the child's full name would be illegal, I'm pretty sure. I mean court case name can't even have a kid's name in them... The name gets replaced with a 'R'.

A lot of jurisdictions require things like this for various reasons. One of the largest would be, I assume, to let relatives or potential witnesses for either side know.

This happens in many different types of cases, also. For example, name changes have to be announced in papers, in a lot of jurisdictions, in order to allow someone to appeal the change. It's kind of silly but, yeah.

I think it is neseccary if they can't find the parents and need to put this information in the paper so that they can say they did everything they could to find the parents. Like say a mother wants to get full custody of her kid but the father runs off and she can't find them. She has to prove she did everything she could to notify the father or the court date before the court is just going to give her full custody.

I suppose you all have good points. I don't know I just think even though it may be necessary.. it is perhaps a bit unfair to ruin the names of the parents and the child for that matter in the area. I guess that's just how I feel about it, but I see your points.

Re: Announcement for Child Custody - September 23rd 2009, 03:30 AM

i thought it was illegal to put a minors name in the paper...i know when a kid in my class got in an accident they couldn't put his name in because he's only 17

but i think that some others have good points...and yeah in certain cases it would be okay

I think it might be necessary, but I'm not really keen on them giving the child's full name. I wouldn't want to go on a playground and have people making fun of or asking who got custody if they found out the kid was taken away.
