Facebook: Home to Wanna Be Porn Stars - October 19th 2009, 06:05 PM

I'm not sure if this topic goes here but I would like to hear people's opinions on this.

http://open.salon.com/blog/marytkell..._be_porn_stars

Do you guys think it's some sort of epidemic about this? I believe so. I personally am really disgusted by the pictures some girls put up on facebook.

Quote:
And these girls have HUNDREDS of pictures of themselves and others in these degrading poses. Picture after picture of girls at parties, girls drinking, girls looking at the camera with the “pursed up lips” (this is so not a good look), girls grabbing other girl’s breasts, girls drinking out of beer bongs and…the V SIGN.
I especially hate the "pursed up lips".

Quote:
We’re worried as we all should be with the economy and the drop of the stock market. But what about the drop in expectations and core values? Where are all the mothers who burned their bras in protest to the sexualization of women?
I so completely agree with this. I'm pretty open-minded and liberal about things out there but why do these girls think they have to lower themselves in such a way? It might seem like "fun" but it's not attractive and the only people they're hurting is themselves.

Re: Facebook: Home to Wanna Be Porn Stars - October 19th 2009, 06:13 PM

Males have just as bad facebook photos with them doing all of those things too, I don't really think it's a gender issue. I think it's a "people like to have fun and take poser-esque pictures" issue, and as such I don't think it's a problem.

It's a bit of a non-sequitur to say: "This girl is drinking beer and pursing her lips, she must want to be a pornstar!"

I really don't like the woman who wrote that blog when she says they should all "act like ladies". How do you do that? By conforming to gender roles as a meek house-wife? Girls are simply starting to act like guys in the "getting drunk and doing stupid things" department and the term "acting like a lady" is utterly subjective. If anything it speaks of gender equality rather than the over-sexualisation of females.

I don't really think that this has anything to do with Facebook really. Facebook isn't influencing anyone to be porn stars. It's just the influence of the media these days, and the way the world appears to be working. All the alcohol and drugs appear to be the main cause of this sort of thing.

Whoever wrote that probably hasn't been near a teenager since her days in college (the fact she's a mother explains a lot). People act like this all the time, I agree it's ridiculous and demeaning but it's a sign of the times. I would consider the miniskirt explosion to lead to porn references, not this.

On the subject of Facebook though, true, people are waaay too promiscuous on the net (me included, but at least I don't post photos )

Re: Facebook: Home to Wanna Be Porn Stars - October 19th 2009, 07:29 PM

the V sign? You mean the peace sign? Eh?

And wow, girls at parties, girls drinking beer, or using beer bongs? As said, boys do this all the time. Yet no one has issues with it. For some reason girls not being 'proper' is worse then men.

Admittedly the lack of clothing can be a concern, it shouldnt be, but whilst society objectifies women, it is (what do I mean by it shouldnt? Well, no one blinks an eye really at topless men. With women, they are deemed as sexual objects by society, so less clothes may increase that and cause danger). Or the fact that people in general are even doing beer bongs and drinking excessively (I mean, I do drink excessively when I'm out, I wont deny that.) is a much bigger concern. Not the gender of the people. Also, why didnt she criticise the boys for letting a random girl give them la dances? I mean, lap dances take two people.

And why are people always smiling in facebook photos? People smile for photos...

I really think the majority of girls posing, and drinking on facebook have little, if any, real desire to be porn stars.

This article is over the top, and kinda sexist.

At the end of the day, they're just having fun and it may seem like they're doing it in the worse way possible but time's are constantly changing and what was consider fun when she was that age is going to be different to what is considered fun now. I don't think pictures of girls drinking and wearing very little is a sign that they're going or want to be a pornstar, it's a sign that they are living their life and they took photos so they could look back on it and remember what fun they had.

I agree with the general sentiment here. Gender equality means women are every bit as entitled to be silly teenagers as boys are.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

Re: Facebook: Home to Wanna Be Porn Stars - October 19th 2009, 10:22 PM

I had to quit reading the link due to the ridiculous amount of biases in it. First, the author seems to have the idea that males don't do any of the acts that females do on FaceBook. I'm sure this is a case of the author seeing a picture of females only acting out but no males involved so they automatically concluded that it's only of females. Complete nonsense. To me, this shows they haven't even bothered to explore the topic that they're attempting to write about.

Second, I'm failing to see where the idea is that the teenagers who are having a good time, being silly, somehow want to be porn stars. Yes, they're not wearing a lot of clothing, yes they're having fun but where exactly is the logic that they want to be porn stars? Here comes the second bias: any female acting "slutty" must want to or already is a porn star and all porn stars must be 24/7 sluts. Not only is this out-dated, it's not even rational, hell, going by unrational nonsense this still makes no sense. I'm assuming that the author wants all women to be "proper" and views all porn stars as "unproper" and so any females teenagers acting "unproperly" must therefore be or want to be a porn star. This is shown by the last line of the author's babble:
"And take their frigging computers and cell phones away from them until they can behave like a lady".

Third, the parents must be to blame when their children are acting out. This would be a more rational idea IF the parents are watching over their children 24/7 and are able to know their thoughts. That is not the case. This is pretty much the same logic as saying that homosexual children are homosexuals because their parents raised them improperly. It's out-dated and lacks any amount of common sense.

Fourth, apparently since these images are posted on FaceBook, MySpace and whatever else, then they must be the reason the girls posed in such ways. It's called backwards-reasoning or reverse-reasoning and it's faulty in most cases. It's like saying "if you take anti-depressants, you must be depressed". It's not always correct and if the author agrees that it's not always correct, then they're a hypocrite.

The other points, although I wouldn't call them biases, I just call them 100% nonsense. First, girls are having fun at their party, they're drinking beer and smiling. There are books and books that attempt to explain such phenomena from a psychological, neurological and societal views (among others). For starters, people see a camera and generally they associate smiling with an appropriate response. I'm unsure why the author seems unable to wrap their head around such a simple concept. I don't find it worth while to post some of the neurological or neurochemical explanations because although I do believe many people on TeenHelp could understand them, the author of the link would be miles away from understanding a word of it.

Overall, it's a biased, sexist, nonsensical article written by someone who uses out-dated, sexist, biased, egotistical and backwards-reasoning to justify their points. The article is basically a fail on the author's part unless of course they wanted to come off as a complete moron, in which case, they succeeded.

If it weren't Facebook, they would use some other site. People are going to be idiotic and assume things they put on the internet are private not matter what source they use.

I agree with Katelyn, if it wasn't Facebook, it'd be some other site (MySpace?)

I don't think that these stupid pictures mean the girls want to be pornstars, they're just showing off and acting tough and cool. It's currently "in" to be as drunk and obnoxious as you can, the ruder you are the more friends you have.

That bit about "behaving like a lady" offended me a bit. What is "a lady" exactly? This woman is the one going back to objectifying females, not the girls in the pictures. They are having fun in the same way we see it as being normal for men to have fun, saying they should "act like a lady" somewhat implies that teenage girls do not have the equal right to have fun and be wild the same way that teenage boys do.

All in all, a rather biased -and even sexist- article...

I thought she was extremist too, but I thought she had some good points. I feel disappointed everytime I see pictures of my female classmates on facebook where they're pretending to make out with each other, drinking vodka straight out of the bottle, or attempting to act about five years older than they really are and just coming off as ten years younger. (I'm a junior in high school.) But calling them "porn stars" is definitely misleading. Try alcoholics.

And anyways, it isn't Facebook who's responsible for all of this, I think it's the media more than anything.

I agree that SOME of the poses are a little explicit. But the kissy face type thing and such is fine, really. And by V sign does she mean peace sign (because I do it all the time) or the mouth V sign? That one is a little vulgur. But smiling in all the pictures or sticking your tongue out isn't that bad, even I do it and I'm probably one of the less effed up kids I know.

Some points were legit, others not so much. It was a little extreme

Hmm I thought it was very extreme, to be honest maybe I'm just very naive, but I don't think in terms of carefree sex, people being porn stars and the like are as bad as its made out to be... Besides if they're over the age of consent... Its their body lol.

Personally I really do not see anything wrong with it. These girls were just having fun and they decided to take some pictures. I mean, just because people take pictures that are not that 'appropriate' does not mean that they want to be porn stars or slutty or any such thing. A lot of people take 'inappropriate' pictures because it is humorous.

I have a friend who takes pictures that could be considered 'risky' and I know for a fact that this friend is not a slut or any such thing.

In the end people are just have fun and, maybe, it does cross the line a bit but why shouldn't people be able to have fun?

Because calling them alcoholics is totally not misleading either.

Pretty much since the beginning of humanity, humans have strived to do numerous things and one of them is find chemical compounds or drugs. I don't blame the media, I don't blame our evolutionary history, I don't blame the kids' parents and so forth because there's not one sole cause. If one is to locate a cause accurately and objectively, then it's likely to lead to numerous sources and each may not contribute equally. While it may be easier to point at one potential source, I think that's the least accurate method.

I hate to pint this out, but girls have always gotten drunk and did stupid things, it's not new. It's just more visual now.

I doubt these girls want to be porn stars. They are just having a good time, and that is fine, as long as they hurt no one, it shouldn't matter what they do, or why they take pictures of themselves.

Erm when you say pursed lips do you mean a pout? I take a lot of my pictures when pouting because I think I look better than when I'm just smiling. Yet I don't want to be a pornstar. I also do the peace sign too.

I think people are just overreacting these days, they do it about everything. Like other people have said it's not just the girls that do things like this.

I agree with most of the others. Men do this as much as women but not many people care about that. I personally don't like people behaving like this either way (men or women). Then again I can't exactly tell people how to live their lives, if they want to do these things then carry on, it has nothing to do with me. Like Joel pointed out, it's their body.

It's not like this is new behavior.

People have always behaved like whores. People will always behave like whores.

The only thing different is that now we're able to document it and spread it - so we've become desensitized, thus, making it seem normal.

That doesn't change the fact that pictures like that could cost people their jobs.

EDIT;

From the article...

Quote:
Where are all the mothers who burned their bras in protest to the sexualization of women?

...What? The bra-burners weren't trying to protest the sexualization of women! The whole point of burning their bras was metaphorical in a sense - it was to achieve inhibition. So that they were free to think and behave in an equal manner to their male counterparts. They could be sensual and they could be sexy without being labeled a whore or slut by the masses.

But overall, she's right in a sense that yup, these girls are tacky and desperate - but I don't like this article, I feel like the author is being completely naive.
