Fireworks set off aboard airliner - December 25th 2009, 10:40 PM

http://www.cnn.com/2009/TRAVEL/12/25...ers/index.html

A passenger ignited fireworks Friday at the end of a Northwest Airlines flight from Amsterdam, Netherlands, to Detroit, Michigan, a Delta Air Lines spokeswoman said.

The passenger was immediately subdued, according to Susan Elliott, spokeswoman for Delta, Northwest's parent company. The incident resulted in some minor injuries, Elliott said.
One passenger from the flight was taken to the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor, hospital spokeswoman Tracy Justice said.
The FBI is investigating, bureau spokeswoman Sandra Berchtold said.
The Northwest plane, an Airbus 330, landed around noon ET. It was carrying 278 passengers. The Transportation Security Administration had no immediate comment.

I agree with Ares...it's just not funny? I mean, this is another one of those 'let's test airline security' things. Imagine if it was a real bomb? And the fact they managed to get fireworks online is quite worrying.

The scary thing is that all of this happened right above the city that I live in...
It's ridiculous that the security is obviously so terrible that someone can get a bomb on a plane. Not only that, but that someone would be willing to kill themselves in order to kill hundreds of other people. This says a lot about how messed up and unsafe our world really is. I don't know how I'll ever fly on an airplane without being scared to death.

Err, I heard from someone today that it WAS a real bomb. The bomb failed and didn't go off correctly, which made it appear to be fireworks.

Re: Fireworks set off aboard airliner - December 27th 2009, 12:01 AM

Hey, it's not as hilarious as the incident where they like, arrested this woman and freaked out because she lit some matches. Dangerous, yes. But the reason why she lit the matches during flight? She farted and wanted to hide the smell.

What is hilarious about this is just the simple headline you put up there. "Fireworks set off aboard airliner"
I mean, what does that make you think? That the guy who set them off was like "Yayyy!!! The flight is finally almost over! Lets set off some beautiful fireworks in celebration!"
That's totally what I do at the end of a long flight.

I think what the guy meant by hilarious, or at least my take on it, is this;
That the guy setting off the fireworks in an attempt to blow up the plane, chose fireworks over a normal bomb because he wanted to go down beautifully. Hey, at least that way all those who would die got to say "ooohh... aahhhh... OH SHIT!"

Take me seriously.
I dare you.

Maybe someone lighting off fireworks without intending to hurt anyone wouldn't be as frightening, but after all the dangerous things people have done on airplanes, and the thousands of people that have been killed because of these kinds of events... it's just not funny at all. Even if it were just fireworks and they didn't hurt anyone, it's a major issue that someone could manage to bypass security and take explosives on an airplane.

I also think the
"ooohh... aahhhh... OH SHIT!" comment you made is a little disrespectful, if I'm going to be honest. Can you imagine how scared you'd be if someone brought an explosive device on the airplane you were traveling in? That would hardly be your reaction.

Almost. Nobody died. And yes, the idea of fireworks going off in an airplane is kinda hilarious.

Yes but at the time the guy said it was funny, this was not known and he believed it was fireworks.

You find humor in explosives on a plane?

Just watch me get on a plane, have someone set off fireworks. Just watch that be my exact reaction. =]
Come on, if I'm gonna die, I'd like to die laughing and making a joke if I'm going to be honest as well.

No, but obviously at least three people find humor in fireworks on a plane.
Snakes on a plane are just as funny. =]

I think everyone is still missing the point as to why a few of us find it funny. Aside the fact that some dumbass let the guy get explosives onto the plane, aside the fact that someone got a little bruised up, we're kind of focusing on the idea of fireworks going off on a plane.
If you don't find it funny, that's fine. But some of you guys are being just... I don't know a bit rude to us for finding a little bit of humor in life. As a poster above me said, "Don't take life so seriously. You'll never get out alive."

If you think about it, you're almost dying every second of every day. But you still manage to laugh every now and then don't you?

Take me seriously.

Re: Fireworks set off aboard airliner - December 27th 2009, 04:09 PM

The thread was posted the day after Christmas, and claimed to be about people trying to set fireworks off on board a plane. I put 2+2 together and said "hey someone trying to celebrate using fireworks - on board a plane!" (why people always assume terrorists and planes go together I don't know). A lot worse has been done before - sure the first autopilot trial involved a flight instructor, his mistress and the plane crashing into a lake - guess why he wasn't paying attention

But back to the point, what's amazing with this story is that they went to the extent of inventing a new explosive for the purpose of this attempt. If anything it shows that airport security is really working, whatever some may say.

Hahah see, that's why people find it funny guys. Not that a guy was trying to kill people, but the first thought in some of our heads is that a guy was simply trying to celebrate using some pretty fireworks. Which in my opinion is hilarious. My god, some of you guys are so pissed off at us finding humor in stuff. Now, if the headline said something like "New explosive made and attempted onboard airline" or something, no we would not have laughed probably. It's the fireworks. pretty, beautiful, exciting fireworks. On board a plane.

And the thing about the autopilot, that's hilarious. Is that true?

You know, if you took every bit of bad news in the world so personally, you'd be forever depressed.

Sometimes in this world its laugh or cry, and I choose to laugh.
Sorry if you're so sensitive. Like I said, nobody died. If they had, it would be a different matter.

Yes, actually, I read it in an aviation history magazine. It's a bit less funny when you hear that her husband was serving as an ambulance driver with the US Army at the time, but I'd love to know how they explained to the rescuers why their clothes were still on the plane

Lol that sounds like a mess... A funny mess, but still a mess. Some people do some stupid things. Sounds like the guy had too much faith in the first auto pilot to work perfectly.

"Well um, you see sir, the reason our clothes are off, well... To be honest with you, quite frankly, we were worried that our clothes would weigh us down in the water, so in an effort not to drown we took them off. Honest."
