Funeral home offers drunk drivers a free burial - December 29th 2009, 09:30 PM

Quote:
ROME, Ga. (AP) -- Planning to drink and drive this New Year's? A north Georgia funeral home has a deal for you. Between now and noon Thursday, drivers can visit McGuire, Jennings and Miller Funeral Home in Rome to sign a contract stating they plan to drink or take drugs and then drive on New Year's Eve. If they die in a wreck that day, the funeral home will give them a free burial.
Services included in the package are a casket, grave, limousine and preparation of remains.
Funeral home officials said the program is designed to save lives by making partygoers think twice about drinking and driving.

My S.O.H wants to make me wet myself laughing but then I wonder..... amusing as it is, its all most promoting drink/drug driving.
I dunno, maybe just me, but the funerals should have doubled in price...

I don't know what everyone else sees, but, personally, I see people who are stupid enough to encourage drunk driving and smart enough to encourage it. They're basically going to be putting the thought in the back of people's minds that if someone asks them if they need a ride, they can just ride with a drunk friend or just drive themselves, because then they'd be getting a great deal if they crash. Yet, also, when someone asks them if they want a ride, they think "What about that great deal at the funeral home?" and then they'll think, "I could die."

i think you're missing the point.. they're going it to highlight the issue and get people thinking what a dumb idea drink/drug driving is!.

Exactly.
By making people sign the papers the people have to stop and actually think "I might die by doing this"
Yeah having a funeral paid for is a good deal.. but really... what sane person is going to sign the papers then go out drinking and driving just because they "MAY" get a good funeral out of it?

It's actually a good idea, it makes you think twice before drinking and driving. You could actually die.

Of course, I don't drive and nor would I do it drunk if I could. However, if I could and did, personally I'd go sign up there on the off chance that I got a free funeral. You never know what might happen so you might as well sign up for it.

I doubt it's going to make anyone think about it as I've yet to meet a drunk driver who doesn't realise they could crash and die.

It's quite a nice idea though.

However, are they sure the police aren't going to visit the funeral home just before the period starts and arrest everyone who signs on. Basically they've just declared their intention to comit a crime, and done so in writing, so the police can act upon that. I wouldn't be surprised if something like that happens.

I don't know about this one. It sounds like they want to raise awareness, but really, how many people will actually do this?

Besides, as Jack said, what if the police check that list?

Some people will take it seriously, and that is what disgusts me the most. Drunk driving is so pointless and thoughtless. People never think before they do it. Hopefully this will make people think twice.

There is always hope. PM me anytime.

This is great! When you sign that, you will keep it in the back your head that you are mortal and you could die.
