Read that in the Calgary Herald.
I think they should just get rid of Toronto Give it to the States.
In all seriousness though, it's a stupid idea.

I, too, think it's a stupid idea. How can you have a province within another? It's absurd.

I think if they were to actually do it it would include the GTA and Niagra region of Ontario, not just the city of Toronto.
It's still a stupid idea though.

This is pretty stupid, as it seems to be that any large city with lots of economic resources could be its own province. I just see it creating too many problems with not a single benefit.

Even I don't get all the Toronto-bashing, and I'm an Ontarian myself. Seriously though, this just strikes me as a silly idea.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

Heeyyyy.... We Torontonians aren't all that bad are we?

I like living in Toronto. Its not half as bad as people say. And besides, Toronto is the capital of Ontario, so if we become our own province, which city is Ontario going to make the capital? Oshawa? Now, that just sounds silly.

After reading the article it does really raise the question "What's the point?" Seems like a lot of unnecessary bureaucracy for no real gain.

Toronto is a pretty neat place to live. I live in the GTA and I prefer downtown Toronto to my city.

I was thinking about this and I thought, how would this work for University of Toronto, as currently there are 3 campuses all in Ontario (Scarborough, Toronto and Mississauga) but if Toronto becomes its own province, then people shuttle back and forth across provinces? Would that mean it's divided into a different university, one for Toronto while the other two campuses remain as two campuses?

I'm not from Canada, but what's really the point of this? It just seems like politics, and like it's really unnecessary, to me at least.

Re: The Province of Toronto? - March 24th 2010, 07:22 PM

A very poorly written column, even though it is just an opinion.

All cities outside of the City of Toronto are dependent on Toronto. This would be threatening to economic health of other cities outside of Toronto if Toronto were to become its own province. It would be silly that Toronto could make its own provincial laws and not be in accordance with say London, Hamilton, Kingston, which are all within a 2 hour radius from Toronto.

I know that outside of Toronto, Ontarians do give Toronto a lot of flack for being a big city. The fact of the matter is that they need Toronto since global capital is going into that area before anywhere else in Ontario.

IF (and only if this were to happen), I could definitely see the Kitchener-Waterloo area growing at a much faster pace.

First of all, this doesn't seem like the most reliable source. Second of all, I doubt it will happen and it just seems pointless anyway. Besides that, you could still bash Toronto even if it is a province. Saskatchewan and Alberta make fun of each other. I've got nothing against Toronto, it's a nice city. I've only ever been there once though.

Re: The Province of Toronto? - March 28th 2010, 11:36 PM

Even if it was a viable idea, who would be there to decide the exact extent of the GTA? If you include the entire Golden Horseshoe, that's 8-9 million people. It just seems pointless to me to make a province out of a given urban area (or at least, mostly urban). It makes about as much sense as making New York City separate from the state of New York (understand please that I'm American, so that analogy makes sense to me).
