National Anthem Shortened -

Well, I have been meaning to mention this for awhile, but never got the chance too. Not too long ago they shortened the German National anthem, Deutschland Uber Alles, by taking out the first two Stanza, meaning now the song doesn't even contain the words "Deutschland Uber Alles". The original (and much better) anthem can be viewed here with English and German subtitles, and the modern one only includes the last Stanza. What do you think of stripping the first two stanza off of it, I personally enjoyed them very much.

It seems "Deutschland Uber Alles" or in English "Germany over all" was too "Nazi-like".

Well I have not put much thought into the Germany anthem but what I understand is that they took away the "chores" of the anthem didn't they? Are they planning on replacing words or not?

I've always understood the first stanza to refer to a united Germany as it was back in the time of unification and Bismarck.
Then again it also refers to the Meuse and Memel IIRC both of which are well outside modern Germany. Also the first stanza was used verbatim by the Nazis immediately followed by the Horst Wessel Leid. After 1945 it was decided that it was too nationalist and was dropped in favour of the third stanza. While we're on national anthems it's rare to hear the full version of God Save the Queen usually on the first stanza is heard |

No they removed the first 2/3rds of the song completely, ergh!

Since I can understand German, I can see why they changed it, from an outsiders pov. It's too 'Germany is better than you" except for the last stanza that isn't propaganda. I like the last stanza, and I think it's fine if they cut out the first two. It is their anthem, after all.

I don't think that changing the anthem is anything you could argue that Germany needed to do - most countries have preachy "We're awesome" anthems, after all - but if they decided to make their anthem friendlier then more power to them.
The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. They should have changed it, not remove completely. "Germany over all" is definitely nazi-supremist. But they could simply change a little to "Germany WITH all" or something lol
