Child Beauty Pageants - September 12th 2010, 03:54 PM

simple - what are your thoughts and opinions?

I personally think it's kinda creepy - the poor girls don't look human. I also disagree with putting that much make-up on, well, anyone, but particularly little kids.

A rather interesting documentary-type thing: http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode...Queens_Liane/#

And an article that pretty well states my opinions: http://www.mookychick.co.uk/opinion/...-pageantry.php

i have never liked the idea of it, to me it seems like your taking thier childhood from them, making them grow up quicker than they should. it just seems wrong.

Very creepy. I've seen a few documentaries about it and usually it seems like the parents get more out of it than the child.

I don't like the idea of child beauty pageants, especially the ones where all of the little girls were so much make-up. I do think that the all-natural ones are much better, little girls shouldn't be wearing so much make-up.

I have issues even with adult modeling . There is no way this is healthy for anyone. It is pretty much telling people that they have to have perfect skin, hair etc. in order to be accepted. To put these false ideals in anyone's head, especially young children, is unacceptable. I think we should ease up on adult modeling and ban child modeling.

Re: Child Beauty Pageants - September 12th 2010, 07:08 PM

I think that child beauty pageants are pretty pointless. All children can look good with the right clothing and right amount of make-up. Most are already skinny enough as it is because their eating habits are usually controlled by their parents. For an adult, it is much harder to maintain your physical figure. Child beauty pageants don't prove anything -- they're just giving pedophiles an opportunity to get off to their children by taking pictures.

I think it's turning your child into a sex symbol, have you seen some of the things the 2 year olds wear?! And have you seen some of their "talents"?! It's sick, and personally I think it's child abuse and those parents should have their children taken from them.

I think it's gross to fake tan and put fake teeth on little girls. I onces saw a show called "little beauties" and I was shock to see what the mothers do for a victory. I would never sign up my kids for that it's all fake and pointless.

I wouldn't have a problem with it if it were tasteful and not competitive. I'm sure it would be fun for little kids to prance around in a pretty dress. However, slutty outfits, ridiculous makeup and overly competitive parents? Kind of bothersome.

I don't like it at all. I think it is creepy and I don't think kids should have to deal with that type of competition at such young ages.

Re: Child Beauty Pageants - September 13th 2010, 04:59 AM

I think it depends. My mum used to watch a show all the time "Toddlers and Tiaras" and the babies were so adorable. But I think that if a child doesn't want to do it, then they shouldn't have to. If a kid loves doing pageants, then why stop them? Yes it's costly, and seemingly pointless, but if they enjoy it, I don't see the problem. Some of these kids would probably do much better in dance or gymnastics or cheerleading or some sport or activity, but as long as they have a choice, I have no problem against it.

My only problem is when the child hates it, or doesn't want to do it, and the parent forces them or tries to make them grow up faster.Children should look like children. So full glitz is a no, but just natural or low glitz, I have no problem with.

Re: Child Beauty Pageants - September 13th 2010, 08:10 AM

I think it is disgusting. I am sorry but 18 month old babies should not have their ears pierced and be smothered in make-up, dressed up like a poodle and MODEL! They are babies, that is just ridiculous. Even at 2 years old, I think it is ridiculous. 2 year olds do not need to be competing, they are 2! They should be having fun and not have their lives overrun by beauty. All I can see is these children getting to 7 and 8 and already commenting on the clothing choices of their friends and saying that people are ugly and being real snobs, because they grew up only knowing "beauty gets you everywhere" and "its what is on the outside that counts." Models know too well that they are beautiful, and we dont need 7 year olds telling their classmates their nose is too big or their face is too fat.

PS I am certainly not saying this is what always happens and that all models are like that. I just believe that is what might happen. I have nothing against models who aren't stuck up, and I know lovely people that model. So please dont accuse me of generalising.

Re: Child Beauty Pageants - September 14th 2010, 04:15 PM

I watch Toddlers & Tiaras a LOT and some of those kids, well, they seem to actually want to do it. And I'm talking the kids that got into pageants when they were older. Some of the others who "want to do it" have been forced to do it since they were one. So they don't KNOW if they want to or not, it's just normal for them. But a great deal of them, you can obviously see they hate it.

Also, it depends on the parents. Some of them teach their kids that it's just for fun, and that people don't really look like that. But others, well let's just say I would never be caught dead with the type of person those kids are going to turn out to be.

The thing that really puts me off is the way that the little girls look - they've been made up to look as barbie-like as possible and it's horrible.

Re: Child Beauty Pageants - September 14th 2010, 04:24 PM

i don't see a problem. i can think of way worse things parents could be encouraging their children to do. i'm sure it's a lot of fun for most of the kids and yeah they're wearing make-up.. but i don't see why everyones so outraged. the make-up comes off at the end of the day and they're still little kids. it's a bit of fun.

it actually annoys me when people get so irate about it. find something important to get worked up about.

They can be taken to far, depending on the parent. In general I see no problem with it. Sure, it teaches superficial ideas to very young children, but so do lots of other things.

I don't like it... They always put too much make up on all the girls and it makes them look... kinda whoreish?
I mean like someone said about that show... Toddlers and Tiaras. Their kid is like what? 3-5? I think that it's more of the parents putting their kid into it so they can live the dream that they wanted...
I think it would just make the kid more snobby when they grow up? If they're winning all these pageants and stuff than they're going to start thinking that they're better than everybody else... When they really aren't all that...

I don't like it. All children are beautiful. They shouldn't have to compete and be taught such superficial ideologies at such an impressionable age, it's ridiculous. They should be allowed to enjoy their childhoods.

I'm totally against pageants of any type. They teach absolutely wrong values about women and focus only on looks. And forcing these values on kids--totally wrong.
