That's scary. If it does happen then I think that's the end of life as we know it.

Honestly, articles like this dont effect me anymore. I figure the worlds coming to an end anyway. I dont doubt it will be from humanity itself. It doesn't surprise me that things are getting worse. :P If they do occur, yay we were right! If they don't, yay, no damage and we can all live on earth a little longer.

This doesn't bother me much as there's always a bunch of crackpots or perhaps legit scientists claiming in a few years, humanity on Earth will be royally fucked ten times over. Besides, it was said in the article, the consequences aren't known, people are suspecting they'll be bad "unless procautions are taken", whatever those happen to be. In the end, the article is saying there will be big scary event, not entirely sure when it will happen and don't really know what will happen, so better be in panic.

Apparently, I read somewhere last year that it'll just cut out satellites and stuff like that so unless scientists find a way to fix that then they'll be problems.

Break out the tinfoil hats!!!

Honestly, solar weather prediction is just about as effective as here on Earth. And satalites have been sheilded now for some of the upper level solar storms ever since scienceitst found out that, hey! satalites are popular and awesome and last more then 12 years in orbit.

I would be more conserned about ground side electricity, because it doesn'tget the same amount of solar ratiation as the satalites. But if anything, it will just be a big EMP hit. Power outage, restart the grid, life as normal.

Re: Massive Solar Storm in 2012 - October 28th 2010, 10:12 PM

my friend was telling me about this in college and tbh i dont quite know what to think of it, if they know its possibly going to happen they can work on it now to protect the solar storm and such like they will find a way round it, technology is a part of life, we use it in everyday life scientists and such like know this so they can do something to prevent this affects of the solar storm if and when it happens.

but to be honest the sun is a ball of fire, i dont think the solar storm will happen, they have said metorites are due to hit earth. and the amount of times theyve said oh the earths going to end, it hasnt ended yet, but really this whole solar storm thing yes it may happen but at the same time, scinetists are well equipped with the most up to date techology and know how important technology is in our lifes i think the scinetists will work to pretect tecnology from this. everyone in the world owns a computer and a tv or most people do, plus other technology, in this day and age with all the crime mobile phones are such a handy piece of technology - i'm 20 and my mum still rings mine if ive been gone for more than half an hour. yes the solar storm may happen, if it does -it happens - i dont think it will wipe out tecnology though, scientists have well equipped and very well advandced tecnology and such like theese days.

in the olden days when tecnology was new it was basic now we're 2010 we have laptops, playstations, mobile phones, televisions, computers, wii's, xboxes, nintendos, lighting, cookers, ovens, all theese are everyday things which many of us use daily, scientists now know of this solar storm so they can work out a way to protect it, without technology theese days life does not go on, if you think about it, what do we do that does not involve technology or electricity ? the food we eat most of that is cooked using an oven or a cooker/hob most of that is electric, if this solar storm was to happen and we were not prepared life would end maybe for ever. but the fact scientists know of this solar storm says to me they are prepare for it and know what they are doing, i may be wrong i dont know, but i do belive that scientists are prepared.

also i said this to my friend in college today - if the world is predicted to end in 2012 and this solar storm is predicted for 2013 surely if the world ends before the solar storm there will be no solar storm, as the world will have ended.

Not entirely sure what to make of this.

They mentioned that they'd been keeping their eye on this since 2006.. yet they're still unsure. I guess it's hard to know for sure with these things, unpredictable things that they are.

I guess the world will end if it has to end. But, here's to hoping for the best.

also i think that people do like blow things out of perportion abit like scientists they may exxaggrate on things like this abit, simply for the publicity of it and so that people get into a frenzy about it and talk about it and such like. scientists have been known to exaggerate in the past i wouldnt put it past them that they may have exaggerated this one too.

i Wouldn't be too worried, i remember hearing something like this happened in the 1800's all it did was short out international communications for a while and made the auroras see all over the world.
This is a bigger one but with recent advances in technology scientists have actually made plans for upgrades to all power grids to make it immune to anything like this.
So our technology stays the same and we end up with psychedelic lights all over the sky no matter where you live. This solar storm has quite the amount of awesomeness potential

People mostly believe that this will simply cause the world to end because there wouldn't be power. No internet. Cellphones. Etc. We've gone without modern technology that requires electricity and such to run in the past, so why couldn't we do it again? I'm sure there would be absolute chaos and panic if there were a worldwide blackout, but people would have to come to terms and realise that if they want to stay alive, they'll need to get a bit more civilised and figure out how the hell they'll survive.
A complete solar storm has occurred in the past and I believe the effects were similar to what they are predicting now, just not to such an extreme degree.

There is nothing pretty about damage, about pain, about heartache.
What is beautiful is their strength, their resilience, their fortitude

wreckage of their life to build something beautiful brand new,
against every odd that is stacked against them.” — Nikita Gill

I'm honestly not concerned in the slightest. All that's going to happen is a few satellites will go down, and some blackouts. We're not going to die. And, you know, chances are it won't happen at all. Besides, there was a solar storm last month and nothing too exciting happened.

I don't know

Most people I know cannot hunt for their own food, or have the skills to grow plants and crops.

They do not know how to treat the sick, or know of how to get dispose of a dead body and will do it in a wrongful manner giving people sickness.

They do not know how to defend their home base from rioters, theives, and criminals once they get let out of the prisons.

Really, this is a serious news article?

There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY thy can predict what the sun is going to do 2 years from now, no more than they can predict the weather on the same day. It is impossible to tell.

That being said, I believe this was one of the theories that popped up around Y2k as well.

It's a genuine scientific prediction. It's been in the news for about a year now that a solar flare will happen in 2011/12. Meh, we're gonna die anyway. It'll put a stop to the New World Order, so I guess it's not that bad.

HAHAHAHAHA! I love this!

The only thing I would worry about is planes going down if it was to happen.

This is a pretty good blog article which puts things into perspective:

http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/culture...need-to-worry/

Basically, these flares have happened before and will simply become more likely from 2012 onwards when the new solar cycle begins. The purpose of the warning was merely to get people's backsides in gear regarding taking appropriate action to limit the harm caused, hence the warning now. It may cause some short-term inconvenience when it happens, but I think we're pretty safe from some kind of Deus Ex ending. (Bloody good game though...)

I actually saw a documentary on History channel (Universe) about the solar storm. We are basically royally screwed if that happens- but they were talking about the precautions they were taking to prevent us from, well, royally screwed. I can't bring myself to remember what they did though. Hmm.

I don't think so- I think the media is the culprit that blows things out of proportion. Of course there are scientists that doctors their findings and publish false reports, but I think I can count more on the media to magnify little things into a mass panic.

And...the effect of solar storm: http://image.gsfc.nasa.gov/poetry/workbook/storms.html

I have this little theory that people just want to die for a legitimate reason. And if some scientist comes out and says "holy shit, we're gonna die!" then that'd just give them more incentive to believe it. It's just a theory though.

Fear is a good motivator to try and get us out of our bad habits. There has always been something looming over mankinds head that is going to annihilate us, yet the evolution of our species has somehow managed to keep going hundreds of thousands of years, millions if you include the ancestors that preceded anything Homo or Australopithecine.
Honestly I'd rather not know, the waiting is always the worst part, I accept I am mortal and therefore eventually I will die, I'd just like to get some hardcore living done first if possible.
Here is a list of catastrophic events which people believe will kill us soon
1.Comet heading this way
2.Supervolcano in yellowstone
3.Global warming
4.Solar asskicking
5.Nuclear war
6.Hadron supercollider = black hole

These are off the top of my head, the chances of me roof collapsing on me in the next 10 minutes are infinitely larger than any of these occuring soon I believe. Wish me luck in the next 10 minutes *touches wood*
