There are people calling for a ban on all circumcisions punishable by prison time and a fine:

I doubt it will pass.

Often I lie wide awake, thinking of things I could make.
But I don’t seem to have the parts to build them.
I am so scared of what will kill me in the end, for I am not prepared.
I hope I will get the chance to be someone, to be human.

I'm against circumcision, but it's not harmful enough to be illegal.

Trying to impose a blanket ban for under-17s as proposed is going to run into major problems as soon as there's a teenager in hospital with a serious case of phimosis or paraphimosis which can't be treated by other means. That's without getting into the fact that it's also a violation of religious freedom as far as the Jewish faith is concerned and some aspects of Islam as well. I'm not exactly won over by circumcision personally, but I feel in light of the fact it does not cause lasting harm (unlike female circumcision it should be noted) and can quite often be done on medical grounds it should be down to individual choice and is certainly not warranted by legal interference. You almost get the impression the proposition maker looked at the word "circumcision" and didn't even bother to look at the differences between male and female circumcision, frankly.

Re: San Francisco Circumcision Controversy - November 22nd 2010, 04:36 PM

It won't pass...first of all, It's not an outright risk to the child. While I do see where the anti-circumcision is coming from with being a natural part of the body, it doesn't really interfere or induce any real biological responce besides keeping the glands covered and sensitive to sex and safe from over situmlation and harm.

I almost laughed at the "protects them from penile cancer" part. If we wanted to cut off everything that can get infected/cause cancer/possible kill us, we would have a body left to snip.

And in general, putting a blanket ban on a religous right of passage,is generally NOT going to turn out well. It should be left up to the parents, who should leave it up to the children.

I'm against circumcision, personally...but I'm not going to impose my belief that it's unnecessary on anyone else. I think it would be a pretty stupid law.

Really? Over here in England were pretty much no one is circumcised, I've never heard anyone complaining of an infection. So don't blame the foreskin for bad personal hygiene...
