Barbie Car DUI - November 26th 2010, 12:54 AM

I found this to be a bit humorous:

Don't the cops have more serious issues to deal with?

Like gang violence..

At the time they didn't. Just because they're cops doesn't mean they can predict when and where gang violence is likely to occur. If they weren't already heading to a scene and came across a man who was drunk operating a vehicle, then that's against the law even if it is a bit funny and have the authority to give you a DUI.

I guess it depends on whether he was on the street. I think he could pose a hazard to actual cars, but then so do bikes.

Wow... Just wow... I see more things that need adressing everyday, yet they're taking a drunk guy out of a kids toy and arresting him... woow...

That is actually pretty funny. I'd never imagined you'd get a DUI for that.

As said though, the police can't predict when and where more serious crimes are going to happen and have to deal with the ones that they know are happening which at the time, was this one and although it may not seem serious, you have to consider the fact that he was drunk and driving a toy car, he could of posed as a danger.

How is driving a barbie car even considered driving? In that case you would have to arrest little kids driving without license.

I don't even see how that could hurt someone else. If I saw that on the road I'd probably think I was hallucinating and run him over, lol. Besides, if the problem is causing cars to swerve out of the way, drunk people not in a "car" could do that as well. I've heard of people getting arrested for riding a horse or a lawnmower drunk but that could actually hurt someone.

Good point.

Well, I'm assuming the man got a DUI because he was driving an un-licensed vehicle on the streets. As far as I know, that's illegal. It's like a go-kart. Go-karts are unlicensed vehicles and you're only allowed to legally ride them off the street (typically). No, you don't need a license to drive a go-kart, but if you take a go-kart on the street and you happen to be intoxicated...then the cops could get you for driving an unlicensed vehicle under the influence of alcohol. A barbie car is considered an unlicensed vehicle, just like go-karts and lawn mowers are considered unlicensed vehicles. It's not illegal to use them, but if you're using them on streets...you could get pulled over and questioned, maybe not arrested or fined if it was the first offense, but if you're intoxicated...it's considered a potential safety hazard even if you're only going 5 miles an hour. No, it's not right that the man was arrested for a DUI in a barbie car, but operating any kind of machinery or vehicle while intoxicated is considered dangerous.

This made me laugh. I can see why they did it, but it's still really funny. xD

Re: Barbie Car DUI - November 27th 2010, 09:12 PM

Of all the things to lose your licence for...

For those wondering why they'd even bother with this in the first place, I would imagine they were probably on routine patrol and discovered this car in the road. Understandably, they would have pulled over and spoken to the gentleman, perhaps to advise him that he should not be driving that on the road and at most warning him. Unfortunately, if they smell alcohol on your breath they are required to do a breath test, and...well, you get the picture. I very much doubt they were going out looking to arrest him, but if you're driving a motorised vehicle on the road while over the limit then they have to charge you. Same happened with a player for the Wales rugby union team when he drove a golf cart on the road about a year or so back. If it helps at all, the police probably found it just as funny as anyone else...
