Artist Wafaa Bilal has digital camera implanted in head - December 3rd 2010, 01:55 PM

It's certainly different

Quote:
Wafaa Bilal, a visual artist widely recognized for his interactive and performance pieces, had a small digital camera implanted in the back of his head - all in the name of art.

He said he chose to have it put in the back of the head as an allegorical statement about the things we don't see and leave behind.

The camera will capture his everyday activities at one-minute intervals 24-hours a day and then be transmitted to monitors at the museum, said curators Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath of Art Reoriented, who commissioned Bilal on behalf of the museum.

But the project has also raised privacy questions about the constant presence of cameras in a classroom.
University authorities have tried to allay those concerns by requiring a cover over the lens while Bilal is teaching on campus.
"We place a high value on his right to free expression in his creative work as an artist," said university spokesman John Beckman. "But as a school of the arts, we also take seriously the privacy issues his project raises."

How it will work, how it was inserted and exactly what will be photographed remain rather fuzzy. Bilal says he will reveal all at a press conference on December 15 in Qatar, when the exhibition opens.

That's a little strange. Interesting idea, though.

I like it - It's a pretty cool concept and if the artist is willing to do what his project takes then I wish him the best of luck! There's always been a lot of weird ideas when it comes to art and this is just another, I'm sure there'll be a lot more out-there ideas in the future! I hope his project works well though, it'll be interesting to see the results!

Wow. I think it's such a powerful statement to use technology in this fashion. Generally, we think of technology as a means to go faster in life, and with speed comes power (nuclear arms races, gold rushes, etc.). In our speed, we often leave so much behind, and sometimes it comes back in ways we never imagined. I think of times when we see people that may need our help and assistance, and we're too busy about doing things as quickly as we can to get into a position of power. We may ignore to see these things as we quickly move by.

I hope this concept produces something really great, and I'll be excited to see his plans on December 15th.
