nothing made in USA anymore - December 17th 2010, 05:01 PM

I been noticing more and more often as i goto stores nothing is really made here anymore. the USA used to be the proud manufacture of many things. It bothers me cause were turning completelly dependent on other countries for goods. I mean yesterday i spent about a hr looking for a USA made bucket then found one at wallmart in the grocery isle and it was cheaper then the chinese one in the cleaning section...

I know the tool industry is almost gone cept a few companys but really whats gonna happen when we move all manufacturing to another country then that country decided were so dependant on them they should use that to a advantage?

what are your thoughts on this?

How would they use it to their advantage? Manufacturing would just move elsewhere and that country would lose business

Re: nothing made in USA anymore - December 17th 2010, 05:17 PM

It's pretty much already happened for a large number of goods - the computer I'm typing this on, the smartphone I use, the majority of the clothing I'm wearing and a large number of items in my house were all made in China, India or other countries and not the UK. Ironically the one thing I know was made in the UK is my Japanese car (I know, doesn't make much sense but hey). Given the UK once had a very strong manufacturing base and now has very little at all beyond specialist goods, it does place it at a disadvantage economically. At the same time though it's pretty much down to the companies in this country and similar countries taking advantage of the lower labour rates and material costs due to the currency controls on the Chinese yuan which kept it pegged against the US dollar as opposed to appreciating naturally. If it's any consolation it's not a sustainable setup and we may well see things move in the other direction again.

Industrial sabotage is unlikely, given the damage it would cause to that country's reputation and economy, but it certainly does put them in a strong bargaining position on the world stage.

lead based paints are a bit different to slipping poison into products...

I think it'll go in stages. Eventually the cheap labor sources will want to move to other sources due to those cheap labor sources starting to demand better wages and working conditions. It'll eventually come back to the US.

The only thing I have that's still American made are my Georgia boots. It's kind of sad.

That being said, like dr2005 pointed out, it's not going to stay this way forever. It's simply not possible. The only reason it's happening is because the nations which provide the cheap labor has a crappy government that doesn't have, care about, or enforce worker's rights.

happened already .. this is from my experiance in my trade and also told to me by old timers who were also in the trade..

50-60's any tool made in japan was junk.
60-70's japan tools started increasing to a better quality so they moved to taiwan cause japans asked for higher fees to manufacture
70-80's tolls made in taiwan are junk.
90-2000 taiwan tools are well made and again demanding higher prices to manufacture.
2000-2010 tooling movied to china pretty much junk but there getting better...

where will they go next?

those are my opinions/views of what i have witnessed as a mechanic and told to me by people who have been in the trade longer then me... no offense meant to anyone just what i have experianced. as a countrys quality increases theyll demand higher prices for ther etime and the company will move to another country..

yep it is its gotten to the point im willing to spend XX more on something made here then X on something elsewhere...

ya it might be but my question is how long will it be before its brought back here.. there are very few people left in the manufacturing trade as there once was..... i know this is sad to say but they day i hear that manufacturing is brought back here will be one of my happiest days..

I think it's been like that for quite awhile now. What I worry about most is the conditions of the poor workers making our products. I also think we should ensure a higher percentage of food is produced within our own country. We can live awhile without new clothes or stereos, but food is pretty important. It's also ridiculous that it costs more for produce from a farm a couple miles away than it does for produce from Mexico.

Our disposable society doesn't help at all either. When I was in Peru, if something was broken you fix it or pay someone a cheap price to fix it for you. If we bought quality products that could be fixed we wouldn't need to depend as much on getting new products from other countries.

It's how a global economy works, kiddo. Why buy stuff out of state when you could buy it in state? Why by something from out of town when you could buy it from town? It's the same thing for buying out of country; if people farther away are able to make stuff either cheaper or better, that will generally override the cost imposed by distance.

The atoms that make up you and me were born in the hearts of suns many times greater than ours, and in time our atoms will once again reside amongst the stars. Life is but an idle dalliance of the cosmos, frail, and soon forgotten. We have been set adrift in an ocean whose tides we are only beginning to comprehend and with that maturity has come the realization that we are, at least for now, alone. In that loneliness, it falls to us to shine as brightly as the stars from which we came.

Re: nothing made in USA anymore - December 18th 2010, 01:39 PM

Western businesses have been moving their factories and stuff to the Far East where labour is very cheap and they can conclusively make much larger profits than if they were to do the same thing in their home countries.

Lol... I think even the American flag has "Made in China" printed on it on the back, bottom left hand corner

"I don't care about politics"
Then politics doesn't care about you either. Truth. You've got to make your voice heard, if you want to be listened to. But that's too logical for some people, so let me go a step further. Not making your voice heard, leaves other people free to hijack it by speaking on your behalf, even if they don't actually give a shit about you. That's politics. So, make your voice heard. That's not a quote from anywhere. That's just me.

Now it's even gotten to the point where products being advertised as "Made in USA" are actually made in China:

The trouble is that businesses can get cheaper labor overseas, so they go with what gives them a better profit.
