A Question for Vegetarians on Red Dye #4. - March 12th 2009, 11:59 PM

Vegetarians: I wanted to know what you think about eating all animal products. And I mean all animal products take for example this: http://www.5min.com/Video/Facts-Abou...-Food-87994777 (Warning this girl is slightly annoying.)

Seeing as they take this animal product and put in many meals that you would normally not think there was an animal product in it. Including soda’s, cakes and jello. Now that you know that food that has “red #4” in it contains an animal product are you going to avoid it? Why or why not?

Besides being a little grossed out, I doubt this will cause me to change my eating habits. That said, I'm not a vegetarian.

And man, she was annoying!

I would just want to know if vegetarians consider bugs to be animals. And if so, would they now avoid red dye #4?

I'm not a vegetarian, but I would consider a bug to be an animal. If bugs are in red dye #4 and I was vegetarian, I would avoid it.

vegetarian= doesn't eat meat, but may eat other animal products

vegan= eats nothing that comes from an animal

I'm a vegetarian, and I'm not really sure if I could completely
avoid Red #4. When she was listing the products off, the first
few were meats, which I'm sure vegetarians will steer away from.
But the rest were mostly desserts and sweets. Also, it depends on
if the producer has put it in the ingredients in the indgredients list,
possibly making it harder to avoid. I think as much as people may
try to avoid it, I think at one point or another it's inevitable to consume it.

If I were a vegetarian, I would have to draw the line somewhere, and that would probably be before I started cutting out all unnaturally red things just in case they could have dead bugs in them.

I don't think of bugs as animals really.... I'm not really a vegetarian (though there are a lot of meats I will not eat...) Bugs get squished every day and they infest things and they're troublesome little creatures. Even if I were a vegetarian, I wouldn't cut out red dye #4, even if I could.

I already knew about this more or less.... but still, I feel rather odd that I'm not at all bothered by the thought of ground up bugs being in my food.

Re: A Question for Vegetarians on Red Dye #4. - March 15th 2009, 04:20 AM

It might make me think twice before eating something red, since dead bugs are icky, in my opinion. However, I define my vegetarianism as mammals only. I won't eat animals that reproduce like me or that I semi like. Bugs, eh, well their animals but not on my list of those not to eat. Although that doesn;t mean I'll just eat bugs to eat bugs.

And isn't there other ways to make red dye?

As a vegetarian myself i avoid animal products such as jelly sweets and certain drinks.
However it depends on the individuals Interpretation on what is cruel to the animal and what is neccessary for human survival.
In my opinion, the amount of animal products that are eaten nowadays has gotten to the extreme where humans have become greedy and over-indulgent.
I also think it unnacceptable that we consider animals to be lesser creatures simply because we have populated the planet, seeing as many species were here before us.

Vegetarians can eat animal products, just not meat. We [cause I am one] eat eggs, milk, etc.
Vegans are who you want to be asking. Vegan is eating nothing but plant based products, so they would avoid thinks like the red coloring.

But the red coloring comes from DEAD bugs. I'm a vegetarian, and I eat dairy/eggs, but my definition of a vegetarian is someone who won't eat products that require the animal to be killed in order to get them- such as pork, beef, chicken, gelatin. If you consider a bug to be an animal (and what else would it be besides an animal? it's not a plant, a fungi, a bacterium, or a protozoa...), then red dye #4 is most definitely NOT vegetarian. Vegans wouldn't eat it either, since bugs are animals. Vegans also don't eat honey (since that comes from a bee, which is technically an animal).

If you define vegetarianism as not eating mammals (as Casey said), then red dye #4 would be "safe" for vegetarians, as it doesn't come from a mammal. But vegetarians don't eat fish (pescetarians, or "pesco-vegetarians" eat fish but not red meat or poultry, and "pesco-pollo-vegetarians" eat fish and poultry but not red meat), and fish aren't mammals. Fish are still animals, though.

Bugs are small, and they do, unfortunately, get squashed all the time (it's generally unavoidable). But they're still animals.
