Student debt keeping you down? Sell a kidney! - August 8th 2011, 01:47 PM

Ok, the subject title is a bit of a joke. But someone in the British Medica Journal has recently suggested we should offer quite an impressive cash incentive for donating a kidney whilst alive. She did make explicit reference to students though:

Quote:
"It would be an incentive across most income levels for those who wanted to do a kind deed and make enough money to, for instance, pay off university loans," she said.
Here is the full article:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotlan...ntral-14379215

I think its quite a dire day where there is even the thought of someone needing to sell their kidney to get an education. And this i what caught my eye.

But I think there is also a discussion to be had about simply offering a cash incentive for donating kidneys. The article outlines some issues with it, such as people donating simply for cash, because they are struggling.

Losing a kidney is a pretty big deal, especially if your remaining one messes up. So although I do think its a bit weird that people who donate a live kidney get nothing for it, I do see harms in it.

I think it'd be better to make organ donation an opt out system. So you have to opt off the donor list, and you are on the list by default. I think many aren't on the list due to laziness.

Also, I don't get people who refuse to donate when they die, 'because its their body' or whatnot... yet they'll recieve transplants from others.

Seconded, and frankly I think it's quite reckless for anyone to publish such a suggestion in something like the British Medical Journal. As you quite rightly point out, losing one kidney still affects a person quite a lot even if the other kidney can cope overall, and if that one kidney fails then you go from donor to waiting list. I agree on the other points regarding donation as well - I intend to register as an organ donor and am with you in feeling that people not wanting to give up their organs but happily accepting those of others (unless there is a good medical reason not for donating) is a bit hypocritical.

Donating a kidney is a big deal, but people still donate them to family members or friends so I don't see anything wrong with selling it. Of course it would be a private agreement between you and the person receiving it because I don't think it's legal. I personally wouldn't sell my kidney I prefer to do other things to get money.

I agree with you here I think it is quite selfish. I believe that if you don't want to donate your organs, when you need one you will not be legible to get one.

Preeetty sure selling organs is illegal ... still I know first hand that being a student and in debt is bad, but not bad enough to sell my organs!!!
Be an organ donor it's far better!!

If you read the article (it often helps ) you'd see that the topic is about discussing if it should be made legal, and through the health service, not a back street deal.

It's just one article. GMC and BMA etc all come out against.

This is the sort of idea that sounds brilliant on the cover, and then gets more and more sketchy as you actually dive into it. I'm sure most of us could use some extra cash, but risking a serious problem with your kidneys because one fails while the other isn't even there would cause even more problems. I think kidney donation should be held to a basis of a person who knows another person who needs a kidney, so he/she donates out of kindness or love. Also, organ donation postmortem seems perfectly reasonable.
