Honest Japanese Return $78 Million in Cash Found in Quake Rubble - August 18th 2011, 04:28 PM

Article

This is why I love Japan :3 You wouldn't find behavior like this in the UK or the US, it'd all just be stolen and spent on TVs.

How many people never got their wallet back? How many people did loot houses? The article was biased.

And a devastating earthquake/tusnami has never hit UK or America so really we can't make assumptions.

I will admit though, it is very nice that so much money was returned to it's owners.

Maybe the World could learn from this example.

I think the world could learn a lot from Japan, not just in this area.

I understand that not everyone is this honest, but the truth is that this almost certainly wouldn't happen in the United States. The culture of Japan seems to be much more interconnected and honest, to the point of doing the right thing even when no one else is watching.

Rather than Katrina which seemed to be "We lost a corner of our country... hmm..." at least from the news I was watching.

The stipulations were totally different, so I don't see how they can be compared anyway.

Edit: Also, we all mention how honest Japan is, but how many of us have really been there? Again, the article was terribly biased. Also note, Japan has more people who lost money, this equals a higher sum of money to be returned.

Actually, fair enough. You did word it correctly, but I do feel that they're comparable. The same result is just by different methods in all honestly.

I've been there actually! xD
It's not biased it's just true - Japan's society is far more encouraging of kindness and generosity. It really is filled with lovely people and I encourage anyone to visit it and experience it first-hand.

Why does it matter if we've been to Japan or not?

It's like me saying "Johnny Depp is such an honest man!" without meeting him. Making assumptions and claiming it as fact doesn't work.

Honest actions are honest actions, regardless of whether or not you're around to see them happen first-hand. The OP refers to a documented case of genuine honesty and good will in Japan, and it doesn't matter if we're there to see it happen -- we also have documented cases of dishonesty and maliciousness after several tragic natural disasters in the U.S. If we have enough reason to believe that Johnny Depp did something kind-hearted and genuinely honest, then it wouldn't be a baseless assumption to think that he is a generally honest person.

You really don't know anything about the response to that disaster.

It's like me saying Apollo 11 never landed in the moon because I wasn't there to witness it. Now you can't believe something you don't witness first hand?

No, but basing an opinion on one biased article seems silly. It never said how much money was never returned, it never said how much money was lost in the first place, it didn't give much detail.

Well, finally some honesty around the globe.
I'm not surprised it was Japan this occurred in either. They've been found to have major socio-cultural differences when psychology is regarded, and mostly for the better. This act of benovolence is but furthering the proof.

One million miles away...
