A better way to ask this question would be; "why were they pepper sprayed before being hand cuffed". Do you not agree?

OK, now this is why...

1. Being pepper sprayed Vs. having a mistorminer arrest record (or even a felony one, depending on what they did) is 10000X much better. Most buisness in the US now a day ask if you've ever had a felony arrest, and a misdemeanor criminal record. So really which would you rather have?

2. There police were out numbered. It is much easier to have a crowd disburse then attempt to arrest them all. Now why is this? If the crowd disburse, everything ends peacefully. If the police attempt to make a massive arrest, their is a greater chance of riot, officers being assaulted and a shit storm happening. People also tend to resist arrest, as shown in the videos listed in this thread.

3. It was a University PD. They are not set up to deal with massive arrest in any manor. It is also a giant political game with UPD's. The Chief of Police really has no power over the department and is at the will of the bored, which is complete and utter BS, but I digress.

If you think this is the 'best case scenario', there's something wrong in your head. Pepper spray should be a last resort and used only when someone is actively resisting the police (as opposed to passively resisting, as these protestors were).

There is most certainly a need for debate here.
I've been pepper sprayed. It hurts like a B!tch at first, but after 5-10 min I'm back to normal. It's not the end of the world, its pepper spray. Heck, I've been hit by girls that have left me in pain longer then that stuff. Oh, and as weve listed, it wasn't a peaceful protest.

Yeah this really was. Pepper spray, when used in the ladder of use of force, is just about on the lowest ring. There's very minimal chance of lasting damage or effects, the subject is much more likely to comply with your orders and it temporarily limits the subjects sense of smell and sight (which makes it much safer for the cops).

And passive resisting? bahaha yeah right. They in encircled the cops (DUMB), they said they were going to let the cops leave (DUMBER) and the were pepper sprayed and later arrested and resisted arrest for still not letting the cops leave (DUMBEST). That is actively resisting arrest. And on top of that, no were in and of the State or city codes have I seen a difference in Passive or actively resisting. Do you know why? Cause they're both making the same outcome, resisting.

Re: Police out of control pepper spray - December 9th 2011, 09:35 PM

I just wanted to say my little bit on the subject.

I can't believe it. First off, the kind of pepper spray that was used is only supposed to be used if medical attention is near by. Second if you are in a prison then you cannot use that kind of pepper spray if one is sitting down because it is seen as a act of submission. Therefore they should not have used it on these young adults who were clearly sitting. Third the protesors were told that they were to be arrested however, the police did not attempt to arrest them until after they sparyed the pepper spray...why? Finally the high grade pepper spray left these student vommiting up blood. The police also pulled down anything that would cover thier face and or throat.

Don't ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.
