Freedom Tower Gets New Name: 1 World Trade Center - March 27th 2009, 09:14 PM

(Newser) – The Freedom Tower is gone, and it hasn’t even been built yet, the New York Daily News reports: The Port Authority announced today that it would change the name of the building being constructed at Ground Zero to 1 World Trade Center. The new, or old, name is “easiest for people to identify with,” said the chairman of the Port Authority, which owns the building.
“As we market the building, we will ensure that it is presented in the best possible way,” Coscia said, perhaps alluding to the Bush-era implications of “Freedom Tower.” But many are disappointed. “The Freedom Tower is not simply another piece of real estate and not just a name for marketing purposes,” said former governor George Pataki, who proposed the old name. “It is symbolic of our commitment to rise above the attacks of Sept. 11.”
To be honest, I really prefer the name Freedom Tower. If the building won't be used for a World Trade Center, then why name it that? This is a memorial building.

The Freedom Tower sounded a bit cheesy, but I agree that it seems a bit cold-hearted to just refer to it as a business center when thousands of people died there.

Freedom tower? I'm glad they didn't/aren't going to name it that. It really wouldn't have been a suitable name.

I really don't like either name, but I find calling it the 1 World Trade Center..odd. There has to be a better name that can encompass the whole situation, other names that people could also easily identify with.
