Unhappy Christian family but I want to learn Paganism - August 27th 2015, 10:14 PM

Can I get some advice? I have been interested in Paganism since I was little & now I have been looking into it more and more. It just feels right to me. My family is Christian but my mom is pretty chill. Most of my family used to be really open minded, but since they joined a church and this ISIS stuff started, it seems as if they have closed their minds. I am 21 now & my father said that he is going to take my sister & I to get baptized no matter if we are kicking and screaming. He is already trying to get a date set up. He said that he is doing it because Jesus came to him in a dream & told him to get us baptized. I do believe that God & Jesus is real, but Christianity does not feel right to me. He had asked me ["what am I going to do when ISIS comes and holds a gun against me and asks "Do you believe in Jesus?". Will I say no and follow a religion based on hate and murder or will I say yes to a religion that is love?"] I don't know what to do and it is driving me crazy. Whenever I have been in churches I have always felt uncomfortable and I when it comes to paganism, it seems as if there is more comfort. What should I do?

Having conflicting religious beliefs with your family can be tricky. But it doesn't always turn out as terribly as people fear. You are an adult and an individual and are entitled to have your own thoughts and beliefs. Whether or not you decide to let your family know about your beliefs is up to you. Obviously your father can not force you to do anything, including being baptized. But you need to be honest with him, you need to let him know that you are not comfortable with this and that you would appreciate it if he didn't bring up the topic anymore. He may be upset at first, but he will most likely get over it with time. You just need to be patient with him.

As a fellow pagan, feel free to PM me anytime.

Are you 21 or younger? Do you depend on them for any resources?

It is tough but you need to analyze your life and find which battles are necessary to fight. If you are independent and in a position not to rely on them, I would politely refuse to be baptized. However, if you are in a position that depends on them such as you live with them, depend on them for money, for FAFSA info, etc, then you need to determine what you would do if they decide to cut you off from that support and whether you can afford that.
