First Communion gift ideas. - April 2nd 2011, 05:09 PM

A friend from work invited me to her daughters first communion. It's next month, I'm not sure if I'll go or not. But I usually get a gift when I'm invited whether I go or not. Just a little confused on what is an appropriate gift. Any ideas?

In most towns, they have a "Family Christian Store." Usually, you can find appropriate gifts there for such events. All I remember getting for my First Communion was a Bible and some other religious-based items.

If nothing else, get her a First Communion card and some money.

In my experience, the only people who actually give gifts are close family members and Godparents, and they may give a cross necklace or something of that sort, everyone else just gives a first communion card and some money.

I don't know how much you are wanting to spend, but the most common gifts are money, or Christ-related things such as a bible, a cross necklace, etc. But the close family members are probably already getting her the typical things like the bible and necklace.....so if you don't want to give money, here are a few more unique ideas that I would personally give:
  • I'm not sure if by "next month" you just mean approx. a month from now, or if you literally mean May....but if it is before Easter, one (or both) of these things would be really cute. The ressurection eggs tell the story of Easter, and when you open them there is one part of the Easter story in each egg. And the book is about what the Easter egg has to do with Christ and what He did for us:

  • You could get her a children's devotional. It's pretty much a book where you read one page each day and it gives you a little bible lesson.
  • A gift card to a Christian book store to pick out whatever they think will help them in their faith.
  • I've never actually read through this, but it looks like a really neat and fun book. The description says: These friendship books with a scrapbook feel are for tween girls to personalize as they learn to find and to be godly friends--and to discover God to be the ultimate friend. "Me and My God" includes an envelope for stashing small treasures while "Me and My Friends" contains stickers and notes that rip out. Includes prayer prompts and space for journaling.

These are just a few ideas off the top of my head, but familychristian.com has tons of things to give you ideas.
