"Closet" Antheist - January 20th 2012, 06:48 AM

This is not a happy story. About a year and a half ago I became an Atheist. I sat down and really thought about what I believed in. My mom and step-dad (My real father is deceased) don't know. They are both Southern Baptist and I'm scared of getting rejected or disowned for my beliefs or lack of.

Do you really have to tell them? In my family religion never comes up. And even if it does just listen to what they have to say and politely nod your head. Honestly your religion or lack there of is your own, if you don't want to there's no reason for anyone else to know.

I haven't told my parents, I don't plan on doing so either. It's unnecessary in my opinion (in my case)

There is no reason to tell your mother and step-father about your recently-found atheism. When they preach their religion, just go along with it as there will be less family disruption by not telling. If you do feel obligated to tell them for whatever reason, there's not much you can do to minimize their response as they would either blame the devil thereby ignoring what you say, disown you, or in the rare case, accept you.

I don't think you have to tell them either. My mother never told her Catholic/Methodist family, there's really no need to.
