Let us know if you've ever participated in this annual event before! If you have, did you successfully reach that 50K word goal? What did you use as motivation to push through? If you didn't get that 50K word goal, that's fine! Share with us what you were able to do!

Was it challenging to write 50K words in one month?

Re: November is NaNoWriMo! - November 13th 2020, 01:24 AM

I'm not doing it officially because I can't stand the new site layout, but I still do the challenge myself during November. I've been doing it for quite a few years now, so if anyone ever wants a writing buddy feel free to get in touch! For me it's not so much an issue of motivation, since once I make a commitment (especially one with a specified deadline) it takes a lot for me to break it, and more about how I actually achieve the goal. My usual strategy is to get ahead over the first few days so that I can afford to take some time off later on when I invariably get sick, tired, distracted, or busy. I also have a private Discord server where I use a writing bot to track projects and to do sprints (this year I've been doing a cycle of 20-minute sprint, 5-minute break until I've run out of steam). I think the trick to completing it is just finding what kind of system and rhythm works for you. Maybe you write better in the morning, maybe you prefer writing a little bit here and there instead of writing full chapters in one go, maybe your brain functions better if you don't limit yourself to just one project at a time. Everyone's different, so just go with whatever feels right for you.

I was in school at the time so it was pretty challenging! The creative juices all left my body now though aha. I can probably write another 50k word thesis in a month if I have all the research done

I've never taken part and don't think I'd be able to do it as I'm not particularly creative. But I admire those that do- 50K words is a lot!

I’ve wanted too but since I only write fanfiction I haven’t done it I mean I think I can always write it the way I normally do then change the names at then end but I don’t know.

Out in the ocean
Swimming wild and free
Oh, how I wish
I was the mermaid
I was meant to be
Poem by me

Re: November is NaNoWriMo! - November 15th 2020, 05:48 PM

I know there are already established rules to NaNoWriMo; but I've always improvised for what I am able to do and I think others can do the same if they chose to do so.

First, I want to go back to what Charlie said how they accomplished the 50K goal by doing bits and pieces at a time. Set a limited number of minutes for yourself throughout the day; and don't worry about reaching that 1,667 word (1/30th of 50K) goal in a single day. Some days, you will write more and others you will write less. I like Charlie's tip because it prevents writer's burnout.

Charlie, if you do finish the 50K this year, let us know!

Getting back to what I was originally trying to say, I think those who wish to accomplish something — not necessarily 50K words — should improvise to what fits them the best. Additionally, I don't think all those words is restricted to one piece of work. It can be a series of short stories, poems, lyrics, a mix and match of one or more. Or, of course, you can go for that 50K word story.

Keep the discussing coming y'all!

This 100%. Although there are official rules for how to win, the overall aim for NaNo is just to create. If you don't want to sit down and write a single 50k word original novel from start to finish, you can be a "rebel" and write whatever else you want - assorted fanfiction, short stories, creative nonfiction, poetry, whatever takes your fancy. For anyone who wants more flexibility in goals and projects, you could also look into Camp NaNoWriMo. It's a more laidback event that takes place in April and July each year, in which you can set non-wordcount goals (such as pages written or edited) and work on non-novel projects (such as scripts or musicals). It can be a good way to ease yourself into the NaNo spirit if the 50k goal seems a bit daunting.

I ended up finishing a couple days early this year with a wordcount a little over 50K. I also remembered there's a reason I don't write in first person POV, so it's back to third person next year.
