Ahhh, very nice. Right now I'm just using my school's Canon Rebel, which is alright, but its lens isn't really anything special comparatively. Your camera seems to have a wider angled lens than mine does; I'd be interested to know: what (relatively) inexpensive DSLR would you recommend, taking it up a notch or two higher than what I'm working with now?

And, out of curiosity...are you planning on going into a career based on photography?

Re: Seen From A Different Point of View (Photography) - May 20th 2011, 02:48 AM

I'd say a good starting camera would be a point-and-shoot digital camera, because even those little ones have good exposure and high megapixel counts on them. I very highly recommend use of a Cannon or Nikon camera, and not a Sony, Panasonic, or other brand that is not so focused on photography.

I'm not shooting for a career in photography; I feel that I'd have less fun with it if I felt pressure with it.

My tip for a beginner is to get a small, practical camera and just go out and shoot. Most of the pictures you see above are not planned pictures.... I just looked at something, liked it, pointed, and shot. I do carry a tripod with me sometimes, but I didn't use it on any of these.

Oh, you're being ridiculous. Your pictures are just as good, if not better, than mine. In fact, I've spent the last few hours stalking your pictures on TH and on FB.

I demand a real, intensive critique of my pictures. Then I'll return the favor.

Most of these aren't my city. I took a trip to Chicago (about three hours' drive from here) and stayed for three days. In those three days I took about 2,000 pictures and kept 750 of them.

My city is Madison. Here are some pictures from there.

I paid $600 for my camera and $175 for the tripod. I recommend that you shop very thoroughly if you want to buy a camera. I'm very satisfied with the camera I have, and that's because I compared it to at least five others in price, features, use, size, practicality, quality and portability.

Don't let your "simple digital camera" hold you back. Before my current camera I had a little $80 Kodak. It wasn't fantastic, but it certainly got me some very good shots while I had it. And it went with my everywhere - Germany, Glacier National Park, Mississippi, Washington, D.C., Atlanta, Disneyworld, and so on and so forth. My point is that a little camera can still take very good pictures; it's just a matter of knowing what your cameras strengths and limitations are, and building off of that.

Hi Casey!!

I hope you're having a dandy day.

On YouTube - you can listen to several different pianists playing the exact same 'tune'. And even though they are all doing their best to honour the intent of the composer - each pianist adds an element that becomes - in a sense - their 'signature'. Truth be told - some pianists are more gifted than others. The 'better ones' FEEL what they are playing. And that FEELING is what defines them. It's what makes the 'tune' come alive. You KNOW you're listening to something special even IF you can't explain why you know.

YOU have that same FEELING - that same GIFT - when it comes to photography. My eyes - and my heart - tell me that you are someone who appreciates the fact that everything has a unique energy. You honour that energy by having a respect for it. And that respect reveals itself in every photo you take. It gives your photos an almost 3 dimensional quality. They come to life because YOU appreciate the fact that everything you are about to capture on 'film' [So to speak] has a 'place' a 'right' to be exactly where it is.

They say a single photograph is worth a thousand words. A good photographer - like yourself - desires to reveal as many of those 'words' as possible. And that's exactly what your photos do.

GREAT BIG HUG
Craig!!
