I took Plan B The Morning After Pill.. Again? - April 23rd 2012, 09:31 PM

So, I'll be blunt about this. My boyfriend and I had sex. We used the condom, "Trojan Ecstacy". He finished and the semen just suddenly trickled down the condom into the base of the condom. I don't know what happened, but idk if it was my fluids below the condom that made it look like semen or what. When it trickled down the condom, we weren't exactly sure if the semen made it passed the base of it or if it was my fluids. The condom never ripped or fell off. So, by the 2nd day we decided to take a drive to Planned Parenthood. He's 20 and I'm 17. Planned Parenthood was closed, so, we drove to Rite Aid which is a Pharmacy to buy Plan B, The Morning After Pill.

I took the first pill and then I took the 2nd pill (on the 3rd day since our intercourse, the next day after he bought the pill for me) but, it was later than 12 hours later. I'm not even sure if we did the right thing. We bought the pill because we weren't sure what happened when we had sex. The thing is, I'm not really feeling any side effects. At least, not yet. I just took the 2nd pill today. I have taken this pill before with a previous partner since the condom did fall off, but that was over a year ago and I did feel side effects then.

Did my current boyfriend and I do the right thing? What should we have done? I'm nervous.

In my eyes, you did the right thing. You weren't sure what happened, and you wanted to take an extra precaution. It's always a good thing to be precautionary just in case something happens. When I took the emergency contraceptive a few months ago, I felt no symptoms whatsoever. It's normal not to feel any kind of symptoms at all. Just with any medication, you may or may not experience symptoms, so consider yourself lucky.

Just remember that one of the side effects of Plan B is a late or missed period. So, don't automatically assume it's from pregnancy if your period is late or missed. In about two weeks (two weeks from the time this happened), take a pregnancy test to ease your mind. Always remember that Plan B is best taken sooner rather than later so it could work it's full effects on you.

Okay. Thank you for reassuring me! I shall wait until my period. Until then, I won't stress about it too much. I'm glad we did the right thing.

Yes, you did the right thing. The morning after pill is not dangerous, it might be uncomfortable later, but it's just a higher dose of hormones than a regular hormonal contraceptive (the pill.) It's really not a big deal. I would just recommend finding another condom brand that works better for you two so that this is something that you can avoid in the future. Either that, or also being on regular hormonal contraceptive so that you have a more steady back up plan.

Thank you very much. After this whole incident, I was thinking about being on birth control when I turn 18 this fall. Plus, if we decide we wanted to continue intercourse, we're definitely using better condoms.

Don't worry about not having any symptoms, sometimes you don't feel anything on the morning after pill. That being said, it's still not great for your body, so try to avoid it if you can (though in your situation, you did the right thing by taking it, so don't worry). If you're having sexy pretty frequently then taking birth control pills is a good idea as an extra precaution (and they can make your periods more regular too! ). Ask your doctor how long it takes for them to start working - & use condoms too. Once you start taking birth control, make sure to take it regularly, otherwise it won't be effective.

You did the right thing. There is no such thing as being too careful when it comes to sex. You were very responsible to go and take the pill. While it may have had delayed effects based on the fact you took it over 24 hours after the incident, you started it before the 72 hour mark, which is when it would lose effectiveness.

Of course, I do recommend using another method of birth control in addition to condoms.

You definitely did the right thing, I know if you'd told us about the incident first every answer would have told you to get the morning after pill. Better safe than sorry. Speaking of which, I agree that it would definitely be a good idea to go on the pill. I relied on condoms for a long time with my first boyfriend and thankfully one never broke on me until I was on the pill, but it was still a scary experience seeing how easily it could happen!!
