Best kind of contraception? - May 5th 2012, 06:21 PM

Last night my bf and I almost had sex but didn't because we didn't have any protection. He doesn't really like condoms so I want to get on something. What does everyone like best as far as contraception? Do you like birth control?

Let me know you thoughts!

My gf was on the pill for a long time and it was successful although she had to try several kinds to find one with the least side effects. She has an IUD now and that's lot's better since there are no chemicals involved to alter mood, etc., but you still may have to try a couple or three to find the one that's most comfortable for you.

I've always preferred non-barrier types since there's a more natural feeling and you don't have the mess or fumbling around to deal with, but you and your partner have to stick with each other and not fuck around as there is no protection from STDs.

What just happened?

Unless you have proof that he's tested and clean, honestly, I would stick to condoms whether he likes them or not. You need to protect yourself from STIs.

However, for other types, ti completely depends on you. For me personally, I use a combination pill and condoms at the same time. Other people use the shot, patch, and all kinds of other ways. There's a nice sticky on the subject right here.

I would like to get he IUD but I can't afford it. I'm a little scared to get on birth control just cause I have depression and I really don't want it to get worse. Do you know the name of the pill she was on with the least side effects?

Ps thanks for the tips

I use Yaz (or a store brand called Giavani) and it hasn't given me depressive symptoms. Well, I already had them when I went on. But it never worsened them. I actually use it because it lowers my PMDD symptoms. So yes. It's nice. Yes, there are a bunch of commercials warning about the side effects, but they were side effects pre-warned in clinical trials. If you're under 35 and don't smoke, birth control pills are fairly safe.

Re: Best kind of contraception? - May 8th 2012, 05:19 AM

This is really a pretty subjective question, because everyone is going to have a different type of contraception based on their preferences, price range and personal convenience.

There are many different options. Some of these include the Pill, the Depo provera shot, Nuva Ring, the Implant, the Patch, IUDs, spermicides, diaphragms, female condoms, sponges, and more.

I personally use the Paragard IUD (as opposed to the Mirena IUD). It's a one-time, five minute uterine insertion in a gynecological office. Price depends upon insurance provider, and it's very expensive without insurance. But it lasts for ten years. The only downside for me is heavy cramping during periods, but otherwise it's extremely convenient. I don't have to remember to take a pill at the same time each day, or go in every three months for a shot, or switch out patches or rings. I'm set for the next ten years, and there is no continued costs to maintain the IUD.

However, that's what's right for me. What's right for you may be completely different. I would suggest talking to a doctor to learn about all your options and which might be best for you.
