Do I need a Pap smear? - October 30th 2017, 11:56 AM

I'm 17 years old and female...I don't think I need one now but I'm really confused. See, I am gay and I'm a virgin as in I've never had PIV sex or any kind of sex, really. I don't plan on ever having sex with a man, nothing about being in a relationship with a man interests me. Some websites, doctors and nurses have said that I don't need a Pap smear while others have said I do. I don't know the exact statistics but there was this gynecologist and she said that about 96% (something like that, in the 90% range) of cervical cancer cases are caused by PIV sex (HPV I think). And the other 4% apparently can't be detected with Pap smears anyway. Other doctors have backed this up too. That was a fairly recent video I watched on YouTube and she was a gynecologist so I'm inclined to believe her. The reason I'm asking is, I'm uncomfortable with the idea of...foreign objects in my body, especially medical. I don't know if this is an issue others have but it's always been a huge phobia of mine. I hate having piercings, needles, IVs, all that sort of thing. So I'd rather not get a Pap smear done if it's not necessary. But I've heard contradictory information, doctors and nurses all saying different things. I think, if they're that unsure about it then it's up to me to decide what's best because they don't really know.

Does anyone know what the most popular opinion is...is it yes or no? And if I do need one, what age do you need to start getting them?

I have friends that are Lesbian's and they have gotten Pap Smears. I know that, at least, one of them has never had sex with a man. I don't know about all of them because that's not something that I'd ever ask someone.

That being said, just because you don't plan on having sex with a man, does not mean you cannot get an Std.

I know that, I didn't start having sex till I was 25 or so but I'd been told that I needed to get a Pap smear around 21-22 even though the doctors knew I was not sexually active.

I do know, that I was, recently told that the guidelines have changed though but I am not certain how they have changed or if all doctors are following that.

I, too, am very uncomfortable with Pap Smears and the first one I got was quite traumatizing but I had not talked to my doctor about my concerns and the doctor I went to for the first one probably wasn't the best to see.

So, I think you should consider getting one when you get to an age where it is advised that you do. Just to be safe.

So if I remember correctly that you are required to get a pap smear when you are 21 years old no matter if you have had sex or not. I believe that is the age but don't quote me on that. Then every 3-5 years after that.

Hi there,

The biggest reason for Pap Smears is to test the cells of your uterus to see if there's any abnormal cells there, they look for cancerous cells. Cervical cancer is mostly caused by HPV virus. However, you can still get cervical cancer without having HPV.

It's recommended that you start having them done at 21 years old, and then every 3 years after that. Once you hit your thirties, if your cells come back normal, you can usually bump it up to 5 years. Once you hit 65, you might be able to stop getting them.

They are quite uncomfortable at first. You could always try getting them done by a female physician. I have a male family physician, but have a female doctor do my tests.

Everyone is at risk for HPV even if you're only sexually active with a female, so you should still go for your pap tests.

Most females are recommended to get a vaccine called gardasil. This is a three vaccine series that will help protect you against HPV.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

The best person to ask would be your doctor. When I went to a new one recently, she offered to do one, I hesitated and said I'd never had, and didn't really want one, but would if she thought it was necessary. She said as long as I'm not sexually active, I don't need one, but doctors could have differing opinions.
