The Virginity Gene - May 29th 2009, 12:40 AM

Okay so I read in a magazine(more, issue 593) about a rumoured virginity gene.

are two of the things said in the magazine...

Quote:
The age you lose your virginity could be genetic , according to researchers at California State University.
Quote:
'It's impossible to say there's a virginity gene' says sexual psychologist Paula Hall.
So do you think it's possible there's a virginity gene?

I guess there's a time when a person feels ready for sex. And this feeling could be due to genes. But when the right person comes along at the right time, i don't think genes have much of a part. It's hard to say really.

I don't see how it's possible?

I mean, the situations you are placed in relates to the age you lose your virginity, but a person can have their own set of morals anyway, so I don't see how a gene could ever DETERMINE the age you lose it.

I think this is silly, and that the consequences of finding such a possible gene are as well - How does that help us?

I agree with Alex, in that there are more non-genetic factors that lead to a loss of virginity than genetic. Even if there was such a gene, how much would genetics determine when you would lose virginity? I would have to say it is based on values.

I wouldn't feel right stating an opinion on this with so little information.

It could be high libido thats inherited, thus resulting in earlier sexual desires... while others may inherit low libidos and a willingness to wait.. perhaps..

Of course the age that you lose your virginity is genetically linked, although due to a selection of genes rather than just one. I mean, ugly people have ugly genes, right? And they're less likely to get laid, and therefore will on average lose their virginity later (if at all)? Quod erat demonstrandum.

EDIT: Hey, my first Latin tag. I'm getting hella pretentious.

It would be nice if I could look at the reasoning California State University has for believing there's a virginity gene - I'm sure they didn't decide to publish their idea without at least thinking it through. It would also be nice to get the reasons the psychologist thinks there can't be one. I really don't think there's enough information here to form an educated opinion on whether or not a virginity gene exists.

Not around so much now that school's started

"Live a good life.
If there are gods and they are just,
then they will not care how devout you have been,
but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by.
If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them.
If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life
that will live on in the memories of your loved ones."

Nope, I don't think there is such a gene as this one.

I mean, is there a gene for when you have a child or your hair fall out?
No.

Its rediculous, trying to pin everything on genetics!

Actually, there are genes that control when your hair fall out isn't there? And I'm sure genes could have something to do whether you are able to have a child or not...

But I don't think there is a virginity gene, it's the way you get brought up. Though, you could inherit characteristics of your parents and that may have something to do with it.

Yep. Sounds silly to me as well.

All my brothers and sisters and I lost our virginity early... (I was technically 16 the first time it ws consentual, but my family thinks i was 13... complicated) and so did my mother and our father, so maybe... i think it is more that our parents taught us that the act of sex is not shameful, that it is natural, and even animal instinct, as is procreation.
totally nature vs. nurture(sp)

I don't know if I believe that... I mean, how did they even research this?
I'm not going to go up to my mom and ask how old she was to figure out if me losing mine was genetic.

Re: The Virginity Gene - May 30th 2009, 12:50 PM

Everything is related to our genetic make-up so I think it's a little goofy to say, "Well clearly this is absurd that this behavior is linked to genetic make-up.."

It's sort of less an opinion and more of a fact - the fact that we are determined by genes is indisuputable (to what degree is uncertain) and the fact that this behavior occurs is indisputable as well.

I think it's best, with my little scientific training, to go with a concession that melds both my opinion which is based on some facts that I do know.

v There it is.

Maybe it's not one pegged gene, but a series? Like Acheron suggested?
