PrEP - August 14th 2019, 10:00 PM

I was discussing sexual safety practices with a guy I'm interested in hooking up with and one of his questions was whether or not I am on PrEP. I've never been asked it before and, to be honest, I've never considered it. I assumed it was more relevant if you had a partner who was HIV positive. He's a bisexual man who actively sleeps with other men so I figure that's why he was prescribed it, but I'm curious as to whether or not I can gain access to it, too. How does that work? Do you just ask your doctor? Do they prescribe it to people who aren't gay/bisexual men or in a relationship with someone who is HIV positive? It it worth asking about? I'm really self-conscious to ask about it and I could use some encouragement or information.

Re: PrEP - August 14th 2019, 10:50 PM

I don’t know tons but someone I spoke with is prescribed it via Planned Parenthood so I’d assume you’d be able to get it at a doctor too. He said he has to go get tested for HIV every three months. I’ve seen the commercials on it offering it to people who aren’t men so you should be able to as well. I think it’s worth trying since this person is someone who has multiple sex partners. It’s an added level of protection. I don’t think it’s shameful to be on PrEP. If anything, it’s a way to look out for the health of you and your partners.

Here’s some more information from Planned Parenthood: https://www.plannedparenthood.org/le.../hiv-aids/prep
