the pill - January 20th 2010, 04:13 AM

So my boyfriend and I have been having sex for a couple of months now, but we recently had our first pregnancy scare when my period was 2 weeks late. Since then I have decided to go on a birth control pill. I am only 17, so does that mean I have to ask my mom? My mom has always told me that if I wanted birth control she would get it for me, but nevertheless it is a scary task. Also, how can I figure out which birth control is right for me?

It varies depending on state, so double check, but I believe that since you are under eighteen you need to have a parent's permission in order to obtain birth control. While it may be a scary thing to ask your mom for birth control, hopefully you can help work up the courage since you already know she is going to say yes to helping you obtain it.

Generally the way it works is you make an appointment with your gyno. They will go over various birth control methods, including all the pros and cons, cost, etc., and help you decide which is right for you. It never hurts to do a little research on your own though.

It's good you have a mother who takes a mature attitude toward you getting BC. Take her up on it. You'll be glad you did.

Talk to your mom. If she's already told you she'd help you get it, that's 90% of the job done. She'll be able to give you advice (maybe if she's on the pill as well, you can ask her what kind she thinks would be best). Your doctor will also be able to help you; they know a lot about the different kinds and will probably recommend something they know will work well.

Talk to your GP. They'll help you work out what birth control is right for you.
Don't forget that you can do your own research to help pad out your decision.

I'm on the implant and now that my body seems to be settling down, it's fantastic! But that was a personal choice. (I picked it because I'd forget to take a pill, the nuva ring is expensive and both my doctor and I really don't think the injection is a good first choice)
