Birth Control Questions - May 23rd 2010, 05:37 AM

I'd normally talk to my doctor about the questions I have, but I can't quite remember when I have an appointment to see her and I won't be able to get in any earlier due to the fact she's a campus doctor, it's the end of the year, and a lot of people are cramming in last minute appointments.

Basically, I've been on birth control for exactly two weeks now. She told me there's the likely possibility that I might spot, but no spotting has occurred. I was wondering if this is not necessarily normal, as I realise spotting is a common side effect, but it doesn't mean that the birth control isn't doing its job, right? In other words, I don't need to spot for my birth control to be effective, do I?

Also, I'm not sure what the brown pills are for. I tried scanning the information, and know they're called "reminder" pills, but what exactly are they for? There are four at the end of the pack. If it helps, the birth control I'm on is called Loestrin and I'm on 1mg pills.

The last question I had is about breasts. I feel bloated lately, but I don't believe it's due to the pills, as my doctor and I spoke about this beforehand and she told me it shouldn't be an issue. I honestly feel it might be psychological in the sense I'll go through phases of feeling bloated, fat and as though I've gained weight, and many other people will refute these comments and tell me I'm the same as always; I have severe body image issues that are worse some times than others, so I've learnt to more or less take their word for it. But my breasts seem bigger. I'm not sure if this is a product of feeling bloaty and fat (which it could very well be) or if two weeks of birth control pills could actually do this to me. But if the pill isn't likely to make me gain weight, then why would it be any more likely to make my breasts larger? Hormones, perhaps? But certainly not in such a short amount of time?

Any and all help would be appreciated. I apologise for such juvenile questions. This is my first two weeks of using any method of contraception whatsoever.

To answer your first question, no, you don't need to spot for it to be effective. I understand why you would want to because it feels better to have like a physical sign that the pill is working, but I'm sure it's working fine.

For your second question, can I ask what sort of pills you are on? Like are they 28 day packs or is it seasonal or... I'll have to look it up, but it seems strange to me that you have 4 reminder ones. I'm on the 28-day pills, and at the end of the pack there are 7 inactive pills, but I've never heard of 4. But basically, the reminder pills don't contain the active ingredients that the rest of the pills do. You take them, so that you are still taking a pill every day and that helps you remember to keep doing it, rather than stopping for 7 days and then having to remember to start again.

And your third question, yes, the pills could make your breast size increase. Two weeks does seem like a short amount of time, but the pills protect against pregnancy within a few weeks of taking them, so I suppose that side-effects would show quickly too. And I believe there was another girl on here a week or so ago who had the same issue; her breast size had increased quite substantially if I remember correctly. If you are concerned, you can talk to your doctor, and she could put you on a different brand of pill, which usually fixes any side-effects.

Re: Birth Control Questions - May 23rd 2010, 07:37 AM

All right. I felt really stupid for answering these questions, but you cleared them up. I'm really not sure about the breast thing. I might be silly and take a picture tomorrow and compare them to some old pictures I have from a little while ago.

As for the pill pack I have, it's a 28 pill pack, 24 white pills and 4 reminder pills. I couldn't find these packs online, as most of them have 7 reminder pills that I could find information for online. So not sure if that information helps you anyway. I might give the health center a ring anyway and see if it would be possible to have a quick phone consultation with my doctor about the questions I have. Just figured I'd post on TH in the meantime.

You shouldn't feel stupid for asking those questions. It's the people who have questions and don't ask them who are stupid.

It is very strange for your pack to have 24 active pills and 4 inactive ones, I've never heard of that before... But they should have pretty clear arrows and days written on the back, so as long as you follow that, you'll be fine .

I have four reminder pills as well, and I'm on Yaz. You don't have to take them, they're placebo's and it's just until you have to start the next pack of birth control. Just so you don't get out of the cycle of taking them.

Not spotting is completely normal, and spotting is completely normal. It all depends on how your body reacts to the birth control pills.

When I first started taking my pills, I was really bloated, and my breasts were really tender. BC can definitely mess with your body for the first few weeks, so I wouldn't worry too much about it (:

Thank you, cause my breasts are tender too. I forgot to mention that.

I'll probably be all SOBSOB to boyfriend later about it, haha. I don't want him to be unattracted to the bloaty me even though he won't be.

But thank you.

I'm on a 28 day pack with 7 placebos. It's so much easier.

I've never spotted personally. If you don't spot it doesn't mean the birth control isn't working. As it's been said, the brown pills are most likely placebos. Did the medication come with an instruction booklet at all? It is possible that the medication could cause bloating, and yes, it's because of the hormones. You may want to check out this thread, it's all about the pill. (: Click.

I hope this helps.

Re: Birth Control Questions - May 24th 2010, 08:24 PM

Hi
Just to let you know, I'm on the Pill too (Microgynon 30), have been for just over a year, and have never had any spotting so I wouldnt worry about that one.

I tend to feel bloated and tender and feel like my breasts are bigger too. Its probably just your body adjusting.

Definitely make an appointment with your doctor though if you have any questions cos thats what they are there for, it may take a few different brands before you find one that suits you.

I actually am on that same type of kill. the 4 brown pills are reminder pills but they are iron suppliments. They also are only 4 because you still recieve the homrones for 24 days. it's supposed to help prevent ovulation from occuring. as i am told by my doctor.

PM me with any more questions.

Re: Birth Control Questions - May 27th 2010, 08:04 PM

You asked what the reminder ones are for, and I don't think anyone really answered that. Someone did point out that they're iron supplements in your case, which is true. I was on Loestrin when I was using the pill for bc.

The point of the reminder pills is to make it easier for you to keep track of taking a pill every day. Although you don't need to take those last 4 pills, it helps to make sure that you don't miss a day. If you have a really good memory, go ahead and go 4 days without taking those last pills, but if you're like me, you need those last 4 in order to not forget.

I hope I helped

Reminder pills are usually just sugar they don't have any hormones in them and are only there to keep you on a regular schedule so you don't forget pills during the month that aren't reminder pills.

Spotting depends on you. I didn't spot when I was on Birth Control but my sister did.
bloating and that stuff i am not sure on. I was on BC for a few months and in that time i did gain wait and my boobs grew. I was on a different BC pill then you though so i don't know much about yours.

hope i helped

i love you <3
