Need advice (women exam) scared to get one for fear of bein triggred badly - September 28th 2010, 03:49 AM

I'm scared to get a women only exam , I am afraid that I'll be triggred badly with past experiences iv had of being sexually harassed in school etc
And not sure what to do?

Doctor willing to talk to me before she does anything an not sure if I tell her about how difficult an possibiy triggering it could be to me do I tell her?

Well I'm not a girl, so I don't have HUGE information about this topic, but as far as I know it would be a good idea to tell the doctor how you feel. Many people (probably most) are uncomfortable about being examined in that area. Generally speaking, a guy should be able to bring that up when it comes time for that exam, and I see no reason why a girl can't do the same. It's not at ll abnormal or uncommon for a rape victim (or even someone who hasn't been raped) to feel particularly uncomfortable, and you should bring it up with your doctor. They might be able to explain what they are doing and why they need to do it, and put you more at ease.

Remember too that they are professionals and they've done these things probably thousands or tens of thousands of times. They know what they're doing, and you can have a friend or other person in their with you for support. Also, they can double as someone to make sure the doctor doesn't go out of bounds. Chances are they won't. but just in case it couldn't hurt to have someone in there with you if you want to.

they are not that bad at all i thought it was going to be wayyyyy worse but it isn't. It just feels odd since you are told to always keep your stuff covered so you feel like you are doing something wrong but after the first time most people get over it. The doctor does that all the time there isn't anything they haven't seen.

Definitely talk to your doctor about your concerns- explain the situation in as much detail as you want. Be sure you get a female doctor, as it might be easier to go through. If at any time you feel triggered or uncomfortable, let your doctor know! Don't be afraid to speak up. You won't be your doctor's first patient who has had a past like yours. She will know how to make you feel more comfortable. Or maybe you can try a different doctor if she causes a lot of stress.

The examination is really nothing to worry about She will talk you through everything she's doing. Nothing to worry about!

Good luck

I agree. Definately see if you can get a female doctor and talk to her breifly about what the situation is. It is not all that uncommon for a gynocologist to have to work with rape victims. She knows what she is doing.

If at anytime you are feeling triggered, tell her to stop and reassure you. If you can/feel comfortable with it, bring in friend to support you.

IT not as bad as you think it is (says the man who has not/cannot have one doen :P ) but you'll be fine. Just tell your doctor what is going on, bring a friend, and meet with her before the actual "exam day" if you can. They are use to trying to make people comfortable.

good luck

First off thanks for replying and its a female doctor i have but she is not a gyno she is just
a PA (physicans assistant) and she is very much willing to help make it easier and comfertable for me .

Second , I was not raped , I was sexually harassed at school, an close very close to be being touched in that private area by an old man, have had guys /men try to pick me up or try to get me in there car so they can take me to go rape or abuse me etc

so i told my therapist and she is goin to call my doctor an talk to her (thank goodness)

an my therapist will explain about the history i have with sexual harassement, etc and that to tell my doctor to be careful with me since im most likely will be triggred an will need alot of patince an help to be comferatable an at ease before, during,an after exam .

It sounds like with your doctor and therapist, you're in good hands.
Don't worry =) My friend brings her Ipod and listens to happy music, but quiet enough so you can hear what your doc is saying! Could try that.
