Birth Control, Skipping Periods, and PMS -
July 26th 2011, 05:19 AM
Hey all.
![]() My doctor put me on a birth control pill called Apri, and I've been instructed to skip my period for a couple months to start. Though I'm very aware of how to do this, I have a question that's been nagging at the back of my mind and seeing as I've only recently started the pill, I figured others who have been on the/a pill for longer can help me out here. Basically, I'm experiencing the normal symptoms that I have during PMS, which tends to be a sensitive stomach (not cramps, but being sensitive to what I eat) and mood swings like the devil. Granted that my mood swings haven't been that bad, and both of these things have explanations in the sense that I'm tapering off my Lamictal and only recently went down another 50mg - withdrawal symptoms commence! - and the pill is said to have a side effect of nausea... But I'm curious as to if the fact I'm experiencing these PMS-like symptoms means I'm actually going to go ahead and have my period? Or can this happen without having my period at all? If my doctor tells me that taking the pills straight through will = a skipped period, is it likely that this is true? I know that not everyone's body responds the same. But it's been bothering me lately so stupid a question as this is, I figured I'd come to TH about it and hopefully find someone knowledgeable on the issue.

My doctor told me you still have hormone fluctuations, but not PMS. PMS stands dor premenstrual etc :P So techincally if you don't get your period you won't have PMS.
I didn't have a period for about a year, but had major hormone changes and it felt worse than PMS! I hope yours won't be too bad though since you are on a pill. As for if your doctor is right...it depends on the person. I was told for my birth control pill that the first 3 months I may have constant periods. Mine were regular, thankfully :P So you have gray hair and you're only 26
that's just another reason I love you... ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Thank you!
Yes, I wasn't sure what more to call it than PMS. What I meant was the way my moody/body changes throughout the cycle and I guess I was simply wondering if I'd go through everything as normal, simply not the period. But thank you!

In the past when I've skipped my period using the pill, I get spotting for a few days (sometimes not even when my period would have been, just randomly). I also do get "hormonal" symptoms or whatever, just a bit. Not nearly as bad as having a period though.

Recently I had to run 2 packets of the pill together, and towards the end of the first packet, I still got quite hormonal...For that reason, I was convinced my period was going to come during the end of the first packet as normal, needless it say it didnt.
