parents and masturbation

Ok so my mum and i were watching SNL one night and they were making jokes about masturbation. My mom who is a nurse starts flipping out about how gross masturbation is. Now i have done it and personally felt really confuzed by my mother's disgust consiing shes dealt with alot worse things at work. I guess it really boils down to the question why are some parents so weird abour their children masturbating and why is there a negative asociated with it today? Any opinions are appreciated

Perhaps for a lot of parents it's just the thought of their children doing something so... well, perhaps 'adult' in their minds. That their children aren't completely innocent anymore. Certainly, with my mum, she always just seems awkward at any thought of it. Also, it can be a very private thing so not something they feel comfortable talking about and not something they feel comfortable knowing someone else does it.

Our parents grew up in a time when things were generally a lot more conservative...for example, there probably wouldn't have been masturbation jokes on TV when they were teenagers :P so while people of our generation are pretty comfortable discussing it, talking about it or awknowledging that people do it is probably something that makes her feel awkward. masturbation a perfectly natural thing, that most people do, whether or not they like to admit it :P Like Hester said, your mum probably just doesn't want to think of you as being sexually mature and doing something like that... I guess it's just the natural parental response.

I completely agree with the above posters. My mother was born in 1961, and her mother was born in 1938, so they grew up in a time when sex and masturbation weren't even something you should be doing until you were married and with a stable partner.

I'm sure your mom was just saying that for your sake. Don't let her fool you. Despite her thoughts on it being gross, I'm sure she's tried it. Maybe not now in her adult years, but in her teenage years, just like anyone else.

I think theres a negative just because it is kind of a private thing that some people aren't comfortable with, and my mom/dad never talk about it and when something along those lines is mentioned they close up real fast. I think its just because they don't want to think that their little girl is doing something like that.

I think it's because parents were told that it's wrong to masturbate, when they were teens. Americans have a real hangup about masturbation, because of what religious cranks used to say about it for many years in the past. In actual fact, there is NO verse in the bible that even hints at masturbation; the bible is silent about it. So try not to worry about your mum's hangup about masturbation, but be sure you have privacy when you want to do it. In bed is the safest place. Also, explore

Wrong in what way? Sorry but I don't see how something that gives you pleasure can be wrong especially as it's not even hurting anyone and it's actually healthy for you.

I think most parents just don't want to hear about their children masturbating or having any kind of sex life. I agree with what Shannon said about the fact that when they were younger sex discussed a lot less than it is now.

The negative connotation with masturbation stems back to biblical interpretation of a few key verses in the old testament, often the same verses used as "proof" that homosexuality is wrong. The verses in question talk about how it's unlawful for a man to spill his seed outside the body of a woman. So there, masturbation and homosexuality suddenly become "wrong."

Today, we live in the remnants of a puritanical society where religious beliefs have played an important part in shaping what many of us think and feel. Our parents grew up as a part of that generation. To them, masturbation may be wrong, dirty, and disgusting or unclean. But in our generation, where there is less religious influence and more openness about sexuality, it's seen as something commonplace and normal to engage in. Parents don't want to think of their own kids doing it because, well, they're their kids, but also because of the influences they have from their own childhood concerning matters such as these.

After you do it you feel bad, i don't know why but its true. I disagree that it has anything to do with parents being an older generation, it's an awkward subject full stop.

Only because you feel in your mind that it's wrong, because that's generally for whatever stupid reason how it's viewed in society, even though the majority of people do it. There's absolutely nothing wrong with masturbation, and as someone else said it's actually very healthy.

This isn't in any way true for everyone. I masturbate quite frequently, and feel no remorse for doing so. It's something I enjoy, and it's something that helps take stress away. SOME people feel bad about it afterward, but you can't say that everyone does since it's not the truth.
