I'm pretty unclear about how effective birth control ACTUALLY is. - November 7th 2011, 01:22 AM

Well. I have a friend that just does it and does it and does it because she's on the pill.

I've been on BeYaz for a month and a half; but I'm a bit iffy because at the beginning, I was kind of experimenting with what time I felt like taking it... I was in a situation today where I really kind of wanted to have sex, but I've always been adament about doubling up on protection.

So, I've heard that birth control has like a 10% failure rate. Can it be assumed that these people weren't taking it properly? I googled it and Beyaz is supposed to be 99% effective when taken as directed. Is it crazy to not worry about condoms? O.o

The bottom line is you feel comfortable. Even if your on the pill if your going to be thinking about if its going to work or not while your having sex your not going to enjoy yourself. If a condom would put your mind more at ease then you should have him use one as well.

Peace of mind is a lot better to have.

Birth control pills are indeed 99% effective when taken properly. This means taking them daily at virtually the same time every day in the manner which is prescribed. While it is possible for you to get pregnant while taking the pill, it's highly unlikely as long as you are doing all of the above. Most pill pregnancies occur from not taking the pill effectively.

Really, it is quite safe to have sex on the pill without a condom as long as you are taking it right, but condoms just add an extra layer of safety (and are the only thing that protects against STDs, if that is a worry of yours). It's up to you and how comfortable you feel. If you want that extra layer of safety, use one. If not, you'll probably be alright.

Just a little side note though that some people forget: be sure to wear a condom while having sex while on antibiotics. Some antibiotics compromise the effectiveness of birth control. If you aren't sure whether this applies to your particular antibiotic or not, be safe and use a condom. I tell you this because failure to use extra protection on the pill whilst on antibiotics is another way pregnancies happen.

This. It is highly unlike you would get pregnant if you're taking your pills correctly (unless you're on antibiotics). But it never hurts to have a back-up, such as condoms. If you're still uneasy about it, just carry a condom on you. But I used to be the same way when I first started the pill.

I know the person extremely well, so I'm not exactly concerned about STD's. It's a strange situation, where I don't generally anticipate sex, but it nearly happens sometimes and we're always concerned about a condom... Egh, I don't think I'd be too worried about it as long as I can make myself take it everyday, which I have been for a while now. Thanks guys.
