7 week old wants to eat all day... - November 24th 2009, 03:46 PM

For some reason my 7 week old son still insists on eating like he's two days old. He only wants to eat 1-2 ounces every hour or two. Sometimes its as bad as a 1/2 ounce-1 ounce every 45 minutes. I have to make a new bottle as soon as I empty one because a few minutes later he's crying for more.

From what I've read online and heard from our pediatrician he should be eating 4-6 oz every 4(+) hours. Did anyone else have this problem, and is there a way to get him on a better eating schedule for his age? There have only been two nights where he's slept for more than three hours at a time, and I'm getting so exhausted with waking up so often. I feel like he was such a good scheduled eater until 2-3 weeks ago.

What my parents did for me, my sis, and my brother, is they mixed rice formula or something similiar into it, making it thicker, and it kept us full much longer, and then we slept through the night... Also, is he sick? maybe he has a virus? Talk to you pediatrician. I hope things get better soon!

Well he's almost 2 months old..
We DID start our son on rice bottles when he was around 2 1/2 months - 3 months old. (Doctor said not to, but then turned around and said if he's staying full it was fine lol)

However my son wasn't doing the things yours is doing.. Mine was just eating constantly every 2 hours (6 ounce bottles)

You should talk to his doctor, see what he/she recommends... maybe he's just turning into a lazy eater... you can buy nipples with faster flows if that's the case.

Was your baby early? He might still need the greater amount to catch up if that's the case.

Otherwise you could go to your paediatrician or clinic.

I would try a different stage nipple first, and if that doesn't work than I would try cereal. Hope you get something to work.

When I told my son's pedi that my son would eat and eat, he told me to just feed him until he's satisfied. He can only eat so much. It's possible that he's going through a growth spurt. He said that right now, formula or breastmilk is all he needs and that I should just feed him when he's hungry, he doesn't need baby cereal right now. It won't last like this forever.

But everyone cares for their children differently... Nothing wrong with that.

I am with Chelsey on this one.

Rice cereal in the bottle is not very recommended. You should talk to your pediatrician about that. If he's only eating 1oz and then wanting more every hour, then it's not that he's overly hungry. It's just that he's a lazy eater. He'll grow out of it, just keep feeding him the way he wants. Babies create their own schedule for a while.

There is always hope. PM me anytime.

Thanks for your input guys. We're going to go ahead and call the pedi today just to see what they have to say.

Last night we tried switching to a little bit faster flow nipple and it seemed to help. We tried these bottles when we first brought him home but he seemed to eat too fast and they gave him a tummy ache. Now I think they're just right for him. Even though he's still eating pretty often, it's not as bad and he's taking down more at once.

It was just getting hard to still be waking up every couple of hours to feed him like we did when we first brought him home hehe.

Getting up every few hours will continue well past their 2 months lol. Try taking shifts if you have to catch up on sleep.

And yes rice cereal in bottles isn't recommend because most pedi's want the infants to learn how to eat cereal the proper way(bowl and spoon) when they're of proper age.

Only reason we gave our son cereal bottles is because formula was not enough to fill him up and we didn't have the money to buy over 60 cans of formula a month just to leave him still hungry after every bottle lol.

Formula is so expensive, for real!

Haha yeah I don't mind when he wakes up every 3-4 hours... sometimes I actually feel rested afterwards It's when he does the every 2-2 1/2 hours that gets me. I figured he'd be past that by now.

Over 60 cans?! That is a lot of formula! We go through one of those $22 tubs in about a week and a half... I couldn't even imagine!

Yeah they were the smaller cans.. and my son was a very very hungry little guy.. which is why we started him on cereal bottles.

And my son is almost 2....... he still has some nights where he sleeps for 4 hours then wakes up ready to play and wont go back to bed for a good 3-4 hours . lol.
