My son did it as a baby, and still does at 2 years old.
Usually it happens when he's having a bad dream. If you're worried about it you can talk to his doctor, or when it happens you can go over and gently rub his back to help soothe him.

I rub my son's face/back when it happens, most of the time it calms him right down. For the times that it doesn't help I rock him in the rocking chair so he can get more sleep in.

My friends daughter is 3 and a half years old, and she cries in her sleep quite often. It never wakes her up, and we don't think she even knows that it happens.

it's perfectly normal. I work with children and have several neices/nephews and most of them have done it at somepoint.

My son definitely still does this at 8 mo. old. Like others said, I just assume its a bad dream. They cry so much when they are awake, I'm sure it has to be one of the things they are dreaming about lol.

If the child has been scared through the day, they remeber it and then get upset in their sleep. My nephew does it when he sleeps, sometimes it's due to dreams and sometimes due to what has happened in the day.
