This is just a huge petpeeve of mine.
Ok, so let's see...We all know how many months are in a year, right? 12? That's right! Very good! Now can you answer this? Why do so many mothers insist on saying their child is 12 months old, 13 months old, 14 months old. If it's been 12 months, it's been a YEAR. Your not celebrating his birth every month, right? No, you celebrate it every 12 months. Celebrate his YEAR on earth. seriously, I don't get it. Is it something to do with how like.. clothing and formulas and stuff are packaged or something? I don't have kids and don't want them until I'm 25 so if that's what it is, then I GUESS that's understandable...when talking about formulas and clothing. But seriously, when he's 15 are you gonna be saying he's 180 months old? No. That's stupid. |

You'd have to have a kid to understand. =p
No, the main reason is probably because this young... probably up to about two years, a couple of months can make somewhat of a difference as far as where they're at developmentally. And I'm sure it might also have something to do with clothing. It's just an easy way of explaining to other mothers where your child is at... for example, my 15 month old does things that he didn't do when he was 12 month old... such as learning a few more words, climbing on and off of furniture, running, etc. Previously Mommy.Wife.Student |

When babies are that young, a few months does make a difference. They develop a lot in that time, so it really does make sense to say that they are 15, 16, 17 months instead of just a year. We did that with my little brother, but now that he's 3, we just say that he is 3. Most of the parents that I know stop doing that when their child reaches about 2 or so. But a one year old changes so much that to just say that he or she is one when really they are past that one year old stage could be slightly misleading.

Also, when it comes to your child's immunizations. Your child's doctor will tell you to come get his next set of shots when he is 15 months, 18 months and so on. Then once they reach 3 years they start going by years.

Little kids grow up, both mentally and physically, very quickly in those first few years...and months
whereas when they're 15 years old, those months don't make much of a difference. And I think parents like to be very aware of exactly how old their little ones are, otherwise the leap from one to two is a big shock. Saying "he's 14 months" is more... I dunno, is sentimental the right word? I don't have kids myself but that's how I imagine it might be.
Maybe it's not my weekend but it's gonna be my year.
It's perfectly fine to be a happy individual. Take off at the speed of sound... |

like its been said you need to have a child to understand. When they're really young you go by weeks too for the first while, every week/month there are new progresses.

I think people do that because of the milestones and everything. After 2 it kind of stops. Well from what i have seen at least. Agreed, i think you would have to have a child to understand. While i do not, my mom is in the preschool/daycare business, so i kind of understand.

I feel like my son still changes week by week. So, imo my 14 month old is acting differently than a 12 month old.
Also imo, 14 months is a lot easier to say than one year and two months. When my son first turned one, I told people he was a year old. The next month I went back to saying his age in months. When reality is a prison, your mind can set you free. |
