Baby Food in the First Year...? - March 2nd 2009, 12:48 AM

So, I'm working on another project for my child development class... We have to "shop" (find online and add it to a list) for everything needed in the first year of a baby's life. It's so much fun. ^_^

However, when I got to baby food, I was totally stuck. You introduce it SO gradually that I can't seem to estimate how much you would actually need to buy. I know you don't begin with baby food until four to six months, but...=/

Do any of you TH Moms have any input? A rough estimation is perfect--we aren't expected to be exact.

Thanks so much!

Haha, don't mean to be completely useless but--I heard you could breastfeed for the entire first year of life, and it was in fact ideal :P If you wanna cheat a little lmao.

Again sorry to be useless, but I wanted to be funny too

With Kain, It was strictly formula till he hit four months, then I introduced rice cereal mixed with formula, then at 6 months old I introduced baby food. months

age
0-12 months=10-12 cans of formula a month.
4-6 months- about a large box of rice cereal a month.
6-12 months=2 jars of baby food a day, rice cereal with fruit for breakfast
then there are the snacks....a ton of gerber snacks were bought from age 6-12 months (and still)

"omg i might be pregnant!?!?!"

Amber, you are absolutely amazing! You have no idea how helpful that was. Thank you so much.

Haha, Emily...I guess that's technically true. But I won't cheat on this one, it's a huge grade and I'm already turning it in late...

In about a month, you can or have to probably buy about... 10 big jars of baby food, assorted flavors (such as bananas, peas, corn, squash.. etc).
I usually start my kids at 6 months because its a good round number, and they seem to get interested and have a better or easier time feeding on "solids" (even though we all know baby food is NOT solid! lol) than a child would at an earlier age.

Basically, think about 6 months... 10 jars.
7 months... 15 jars.
8 months... 20 jars. And so on and so forth.
Dont forget to stick in the occasional chew bisquit (you can find what im talking about at gerber.com sites).
Another thing, if you want to give variety on your paper, do one thats based on you making all your childrens baby food with a blender.
1 banana = one serving of banana baby food.
Im all natural so... yeah i make my own baby food lol.

Here's Logan's feeding schedule from birth to 12 months

1-2 months: 10-12 cans of formula a month
2-4 months: 10-12 cans of formula + 1 box of baby cereal single grain rice (mixed into his bottle, if we didn't mix the cereal we'd go through about 17 cans of formula cause it wasn't enough to fill his appetite)a month
4-6 months: 10-12 cans of formula + 1 box of baby cereal single grain rice + 10/12 jars of baby food a month and sometimes biter bisquits
6-10 months: 10-12 cans of formula + 2 boxes of baby cereals and around 20/25 jars of baby food + 2-3 snack foods like Graduate puffs and crackers a month
10-12 months: 10-12 cans of formula + 1 box of cereal and 30 jars of baby food + cereal bars for the morning + regular dinners with allen and I + 8 oz of regular milk at the 12th month mark.
Oh and he still got some snack items like the Graduate puffs, and crackers and fruits.

Yes my son loves food lol.

4 months 10 formula, 1 baby rice, 1 baby cereal, 1 jar every 2 days

With the twins and kade i introduced baby foods at 6 weeks just like my parents did. in the first month alone i used sixty-two jars of food with the twins and thirty-one with kade. by the time The twins were a year old they ate three jars a day, don't have twins, it is expensive.

you could forget about buying baby food and go down the baby led weaning route where baby eats exactly what you eat! iv been doing that with my daughter since she was 6-7 months old. there are many advantages to baby led weaning and one of them is the fact you dont have to buy any extra bits and bobs!

for example. today jenna has had a slice of toast , tuna pasta for lunch and she will have what ever we are having tonight for dinner. probably chilli and rice! baby led weaning is all about baby putting food into their mouth when they want to instead of parents putting food in their mouth when the parent wants too!

anothing thing to remember is ''foods for fun until theyre 1''. i also know you can breastfeed until toddlers wean themselve of which can be at any age so you dont HAVE to stop breastfeeding at any age!

my mom cheated with me, she bought a blender and pureed whatever was for dinner that night, she'd puree a little of everything and then feed it to me(after she found out what i was allergic to and what i wasnt! im so glad i dont have to eat spinach!)
