First Appointment Questions. - July 14th 2011, 11:04 PM

Hey Mommy's,

Well, as some of you may know, my sister is expecting her first child. Her 'official' due date is February 20th, making her about two months pregnant. However...well, I'll give the back story.

Over the weekend, my sister and her boyfriend were away on a trip to Florida. Around 9 o'clock here, 10 o'clock there, we received a phone call from my sister and she sounded frantic. She spoke to my mom whom told me that my sister was experiencing some heavy bleeding. She was rushed to the emergency room in Florida, and within a couple of hours, they had an answer. The doctor who examined her had said that the baby (and the placenta) had detached from the uterine wall. Not a whole lot, just a little tearing. They did an ultrasound and thankfully, the baby still had a heartbeat of about 144 beats (Is this normal?).

Well, the released her and when she came home Monday, she seemed fine just a little shaken up. The next day while she was at work, she began experiencing clotting. She was told by her doctor to get to the ER again, and so that's what she did. My mom and my grandmother both accompanied her there, and again, everything seemed fine.

Yesterday, she had her first 'official' doctors appointment, and I joined her so she didn't have to wait or be in the exam room alone. The did the normal pap smear test, checking for signs of STD's and such, and then did a urine test and a blood test. Today, the doctor called and said she needed to return back to the office Tuesday for the results of her blood test and it didn't sound good. What could go wrong in a blood test? Does any one know?

I'm extremely worried about the health of my sister, along with the health of my niece or nephew. I am extremely excited about becoming a first time aunt, and I want things to go as smoothly as possible. But, just continuously hearing this bad news makes me want to doubt everything. Can anyone tell me if what the doctor did during her first visit was the right thing? And, what could possibly go wrong?

There might be nothing wrong, they won't know until they get the results and also give them to you, but they could be calling her back for many reasons, to show her it's all healthy, or maybe there's something going on with her, but it may or may not involve the baby in that case, just try not to stress too much and wait until Tuesday to find everything out.

The doctor did every thing fine during her first visit..

I would be worried about the baby detaching from the wall.... Have they checked her by ultrasound since that last one?

The doctor could have found low, or decreasing amounts of hcg in her blood.... which would be bad...

I would go with her when she goes back, heavy bleeding and the baby detaching from the wall does not sound good at all.

I want to say try not to worry but it all just honestly sounds not good.

Give her lots of hugs, and pray for the best. Let us know what happens with the little bean.

-edit to add, They could have just found out your sister carries a bad gene... When I was pregnant with my son they discovered I carry the cystic fibrosis gene...... Since hubby doesn't carry it, they didn't bother to test any further, if they had they would have been able to tell me I have a lung disorder/condition whatever you want to call it and we would have been able to watch my lungs for the past 4 years.

That makes perfect sense Amy.

Her doctor said that everything is fine. They did an ultrasound on Sunday, when she was in the ER initially for the first spout of bleeding. The baby had a good strong heartbeat, and they said that even though it was detached, that it could heal itself or even stay that way during the entire pregnancy and she'd be fine. I believe they also checked her again when she went back to the ER on Tuesday (That was for the clotting that turned out to be old blood).

The doctor Wednesday said that the blood he was seeing during the exam was old, and that there wasn't anything new and that her cervix is closed, so this is really good. I'm just going to hope for the best, and be there for my sister. She's my world, and I'd do anything for her.
