Abortion Question - UK Help Most Suited. - August 22nd 2011, 12:25 PM

Hi there.

So, I'm pregnant but unfortunately I am not in a position to keep the child. I've been pregnant before and had an abortion but it was a surgical procedure and had to visit a special clinic miles from my home. This time I'm aware of the situation a lot earlier and through research I beleive I will probably be given the 2 day tablet course... thing.

My question is, do I have to visit a special clinc to take these tablets or will I be able to do it under my GP's supervision? Last time the closest clinics were 30 miles away and I have no excess money whatsoever to travel to these places. It's getting me really quite worked up, your quick response would be very much appreciated - thank you.

P.S - I ask for UK help since I imagine there are quite siginifcant differences in sytems between countries.

Although I'm not from the UK, I think the best thing to do would be to search some clinics near your home and to get a professional opinion on what you should do. If the Abortion Pill requires you to be supervised by a doctor, then you should do exactly that. If not, then acquire the pills and take them as directed by instructions or by your doctor. Even so, you'll have to have some sort of surgical procedure done once an abortion is accomplished considering you need to get all the matter out of your body.

Hope this helped and good luck.

Make an appointment to see your doctor. S/He will be able to tell you whether you will need to go to a clinic or not.

Most medical abortions don't require a d&c afterwards, its only if they find that all matter hasn't been expelled. Otherwise, what would be the point Its basically an induced miscarriage and only about half of miscarriages require a d&c.

Sorry OP that I can't answer your question as I live in the US. I just didn't want you to think your medical abortion would still require a surgical procedure, although its not completely out of the question.

I'm from the US, but you SHOULD be able to get the pills from a GP. Basically, when you take the first pill (usually you take it in the office, in front of your doctor), it stops the baby from growing. You'll then typically be sent home with the other pill to take 24 hours later to induce the contractions and possibly pain killers if they're offered and you pay for them. Once the contractions begin, it's going to be like a VERY intense period.

About a week later, you'll probably have to go back to have an ultrasound to make sure that everything came out, so you won't need a D&C. If you don't need one - which most people don't - then you'll free to go. It's really only two quick appointments.

I'm pretty sure you can get them via any doctor, but I'd call around and ask before taking the drive. They'll be able to tell you a definite answer.
