Getting toddlers to go to sleep - November 22nd 2011, 01:54 AM

My twins are 17 month old and they stay up wait too late. They don't go to sleep until like 11 or 12. I have no idea what to do. I put them to bed early but they just scream and cry or talk and play with each other. I'm loosing my mind and I am willing to try anything
Thanks in Advance

Do they share a bed? If so, maybe it's time to put them in separate areas to sleep. I'm not taking about taking them out of their room, but giving them each their own place to sleep where they can't mess with each other, will put them to sleep. They're still young, but their sleeping habits should definitely have begun to progress. If they nap during the day, don't let it be for that often, so they get tired quicker.

They still sleep in cribs but not the same one. They go to daycare but I guess I ask the teachers not to let them sleep that long

Just let them cry. They'll cry themselves to sleep.

Try the stay in bed technique, put them to bed, tell them 'its bed time, night darling' then when they get out put them back to bed tell them 'it's bed time' and if they get out again say nothing and just put them straight back to bed. I've seen it done on supernanny countless times and it usually works.

GAVE UP

she let her fake smile fade and as she did a tear rolled down her cheek and she whispered

' i can't do this anymore'

That's rude.

To the OP: I suggest putting them in bed and leaving them there. They'll fall asleep eventually and they'll catch on that a certain time is bedtime and that's that. Good luck.

She asked for advice on how to get her kids to go to sleep. Not for advice on whether or not she should have kids.

I agree with Brittany that she asked advice on how to get them to sleep not about weather or not she should have kids. Also its a bit late to give her advice on that anyways. So it was a kind of pointless thing to say. You have the right to your opinion but it wasn't really needed here. Also it is not always that simple.

Re: Getting toddlers to go to sleep - November 22nd 2011, 11:18 PM

Sorry
And I forgot earlier to say that about getting them to sleep. When I was younger I used to do the same thing and what worked for me was just telling me I had to be quiet because other people were sleeping. I still stay up late I think that's just how some people are and maybe they won't grow out of it. They will sleep when they are tired enough so maybe just putting them in their room and telling them they don't have to sleep right away but they have to be quiet. Hope I am of help .

They are still really little, and the fact that they share a room probably wont help this issue much as they will constantly have someone to keep them awake.

I would try and wear them out. Play with them hard when you have them. Make sure they eat good, and have full bellies at bed time.
When it's time for bed, read them a book, lay them down and tell them its time to sleep.
Check on them every 5 or 10 minutes to let them know it's time for sleep and to settle down.

Hey, well I 'm not a mom or anything but I thought I'd throw my two cents in anyways. i use to babysit a lot and I found that sometimes it was best to just make sure they were doing something quietly in their bed such as looking at a book or playing with a teddy or something. Just remind them that it is quiet time so whatever they are doing has to be quiet and by themselves in their beds. (and as much as it sucks to hear them cry sometimes its all you can do to let them cry it out and let them fall asleep)

I'm so glad things have worked out for you Amber! Sounds like your girls are growing up too fast.

Since the problem has mostly been resolved, I'm going to go ahead and close this thread. Feel free to PM if you'd like it reopened, or you could begin a new thread on updates or if another problem arises!
