Exclamation When is the earliest I can take a pregnancy test? - December 2nd 2011, 04:04 PM

Okay, so I have been with my boyfriend for about two years and I have always been on the depo-provera shot (birth control). I stopped taking it about a month or two ago. Meaning that I was supposed to get the shot 2 months ago and never did. So, we have been using condoms. Two nights ago, the condom broke and I am just curious as to the earliest I can take a pregnancy test. I will also add that I have not had my period since I stopped taking the birth control and have not had one the entire time I was on it. So I can't go by that. Please help (:

Hi there.

Since the condom only broke two days ago, it's still too early to take a test right now. Depending on the pregnancy test in which you're purchasing, some can be taken within a week of unprotected sex, or for an emergency. But, the most common wait time is about two weeks after the incident happened. You could always wait a month or so as well, but since you haven't had your period in a long time, then waiting two weeks might be the best bet.

Keep in mind that there is a form of contraception called Plan B, or the emergency pill. This can't be taken like regular birth control, only in emergency cases only, like yours because the condom broke. You can get this over the counter at any pharmacy without a prescription as long as you're 17 or older. And, it must be taken within the first 72 hours for it to be effective. Of course, the sooner you take it, the better the chances of it working are. Taking Plan B within the first 24 hours reduces your chances of pregnancy by 95%, and 61% taken any time after that within the 72 hours.

Definitely look into Plan-B since you still have some time left to use it. And I would suggest waiting 2 weeks. If you are still worried after a negative test, test again two days to a week after the first test.

Take care

I'm not worried about becoming pregnant. My boyfriend and I have talked about it and we decided we weren't planning on a baby. However, if it happens it happens. He wants a baby and after his last marriage, he never thought he would meet someone he could be happy enough to want to have a baby with. I just want to know as soon as possible that way I can start prenatal care.
