hpv and pregnancyi - March 14th 2012, 05:25 PM

I just found I have hpv. How will this effect childbirth or having a baby in the future?

According to this site, and this site, HPV shouldn't affect a developing baby. It also says, that sometimes the HPV can be caused by tissue changes in the cervix during pregnancy, and once you've given birth, it goes away.

There is a very small chance of transmitting the virus to the baby during birth, but that's very rare, and the child's body usually fixes itself.

The second link also states:

Quote:
The presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) by itself should not affect your ability to get pregnant. But in some cases, having HPV can increase your risk of developing precancerous or cancerous cells in your cervix, which could affect both your fertility and your ability to carry a baby to term.
However, it's important to remember that while HPV may increase your risk of developing cervical cancer, this doesn't always happen.

I hope the pregnancy goes well!

I can imagine it was quite shocking, but a mistake a lot of people tend to make is to assume HPV = cervical cancer. It's fairly common during pregnancy, because of hormone changes etc. but it's fairly rare for it to mutate. Have you spoken to your doctor about it?

Hi Jennifer,

I would really recommend speaking to your doctor about this. Surely if they told you that you had HPV, they would have also given you more information about what it means?

This site gives a lot of information about HPV. If you read it, you'll see that it says that HPV is incredibly common and that most people fight off the infection within a few years. I know it must be shocking to be told that you have a STI, but you are going to be okay. It is unlikely that having HPV will cause any issues for you.

Yes I talked to my doctor she said I have it for life. But I guess for it showing no symptoms having babies in the future or even this one are fine and won't get hpv from me
